>>As for transferring items, it's a gamble to just drop an item and log in the other character to pick it up. I've done that before and it usually works if you're careful (You have to be fast).

Please don't ever do this. Your quickness does not matter if the area of the game unloads, which is what it will do if there are no other players in it when you log out.

As a player, you have no way of telling if there are any other players in the specific area you're in unless they are literally standing in the same room as you (in which case they are either trustworthy enough to hold your stuff so you might as well hand it to them, or they aren't and would just take the stuff you left on the ground anyway), since the way areas are broken up behind the scenes is complex and conforms to things that aren't visible to players. Anything lost to the area unloading is immediately and automatically deleted. This is a data storage/memory thing that allows the game to run more smoothly.

This is also completely separate from the janitor mechanics, which periodically clear out their covered areas of the game when triggered manually by players via DUMP JUNK, or automatically when they note a certain threshold of items on the ground. Janitored items spend a little bit of time hanging out in the janitor's storage area, which GMs can access, before deletion. This is why GMs can sometimes find lost items, but not always.

This is really off topic for this folder, though, so if anyone wants to discuss this further, it's best that we take it elsewhere! I suggest http://forums.play.net/forums/DragonRealms/Discussions%20with%20DragonRealms%20Staff%20and%20Players/General%20Discussions/view
