Albuam's favorite topic in Journey to the Forbidden West, no matter how often he strays from it, is inevitably himself. So he did touch on this.

His dragon-host was an ancient and wise dragon, perhaps the most royal of all dragons. As one of the Life Dragons, his host gave up the use of certain classical features of dragonkind for his power over life and death. Between this and the dragon's age, hunting had become cumbersome.

Plus, Albuam is an utterly faultless hero (according to Albuam) and wished to help the dragon out of his great respect for the noble beast.
