Perhaps this will help.

At the moment of searching is indeed when the potential treasure of a creature is determined, that you were correct on. However, the odds of getting a creature with a box is exactly and unchangably the same regardless if you loot for goods or loot for boxes. Essentially the LOOT verb is a filter for SEARCHing them. If you never ever want anything but boxes, LOOT BOXES will filter out whatever other treasure/gear/junk might have normally generated and only show you the boxes. Sure, you still have the option to LOOT TREASURE if you then decide you might want the coin/gems as well, but if you are going to do that on every single one, LOOT GOODS will get you the same results over time. Your odds of a box do not go up or down with LOOT BOXES, it just screens out seeing all of the other possible items really. The only exception to this is that LOOT TREASURE, when used first will always get you some coins/gems, but exclude the chances of boxes for those that absolutely don't want boxes at all.

As the others have said, if you want all the boxes you can get but will still take the loose gems and coins as well, LOOT GOODS will get you those results with less technical complications.
