Pretty much what you said: the Shifting that PC Empaths are capable of performing is cosmetic. The grand Jomay-style shifting of yesteryear, doing incredible feats like turning people into statues and conjuring up diseases, is untaught and curiously eludes attempts to recreate.
Or, to type plainly (since we've all but screamed this at this point), Necromancers don't have the same relationship with the First Empaths and Khalo that Empaths have, and do not abide under their restrictions social and metaphysical. Instead they have a plethora of other things gunning for their necroasses. | |

The question was "Those all sound cool, though I am curious about Rite of Defiance. Any chance you could go into more on how Empathic shifting and this spell differ? I'm curious from a lore standpoint how/why Rite of Defiance extends lifespan where shifting does not. (I know the short answer is essentially 'Empathic age shifting is only cosmetic'.)" -GAMERGIRL151
