I'd say more broadly that there needs to be a development vision that encompasses both RP and mechanical considerations. This affects both considerations of what we give a guild ("Why should Moon Mages get this ability?") and the 'lore wrapper' behind it ("How should this ability, now that we've decided Moon Mages should get it, be described and interpreted in the lore of the game?").

Without doing this work, you get abilities being slapped onto a guild without any coherent design. Take Bards pre-Raesh. Bards had the ability to read any scroll... for no real reason except they could do it in D&D. There was a proposal years ago to give them songbird pets. Because songs. It was complete conceptual chaos.

Paladins are difficult because Clerics exist and are far more expansive than a typical game. There's no room for Palaidins to be the holy smiters of demons and undead, as a primary identity, because there's already a guild that does that as efficiently as we care to let any PC do it.

So where does that leave a vision for Paladins? I donno. I've been quoted as saying that the Paladin Guild shouldn't exist, and this is the problematic I refer to in that quote.
