A form of silica, opal is classed as a mineraloid and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock. It is most commonly found within limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl, and basalt.
There are two classes of opal referred to as precious and common. Precious opal displays iridescence and common opal does not. Depending on the conditions in which it formed, opal may be transparent, translucent, or opaque with a background color of white, black, or nearly any color. Black opal is considered to be the rarest, while white, grey, and green are most common.
