Sphalerite is sulfide mineral and also an ore of zinc with a high iron content. An iron-rich variety will always be opaque, though sphalerite can be transparent to translucent as well. It typically occurs in association with pyrite, quartz, and other sulfides and found in a variety of deposit types, though primarily in sedimentary exhalative and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Miners have been known to refer to sphalerite as zinc blende, black-jack, and ruby blende. It is used for zinc, bronze, gemstones, and other things. As an ore, 95% of all primary zinc is extracted from sphalerite ore.
Sphalerite can be found in colors from light to dark brown, red-brown, yellow, red, green, light blue, black, and colorless. Its luster is adamantine, resinous, and greasy. It can be fluorescent and triboluminescent and is non-magnetic.
