Jet, also known as black amber, is a geological material and the lowest rank of coal and is considered to be a minor gemstone. Unlike many gemstones, jet is a mineral, but rather a mineraloid as it has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure.

It is a product of decomposition of wood from millions of years ago and is found in both hard and soft forms. Hard jet is the result of carbon compression and salt water.

Entirely opaque, jet can be found in black and occasionally brown coloration.
