The bog lantern is a tropical flowering plant native to the brackish swamps of Taisidon. It grows in saturated mud, along the margins of still blackwater pools, and among the exposed roots of mangroves, particularly where decaying vegetation has enriched the soil. It tolerates both fresh and brackish water and is most commonly found in sheltered wetlands.

The plant itself is broad-leaved and relatively unremarkable compared to its flowers. Several fleshy stalks rise from a rhizome buried in the mud, each bearing one or more pendulous blossoms enclosed within overlapping waxy bracts. Ranging from deep amber to burnt orange and often marked with fine crimson veins, the translucent bracts give each blossom the appearance of a small hanging lantern. Near dusk, they seem to catch and hold the last traces of sunlight.

Within the bracts hangs the true flower, smaller and much darker than its surrounding enclosure. Its wine-red petals shade almost to black within the throat, where a cluster of pale golden stamens rests in shadow. Beads of nectar often collect along the lower edges of the blossom, giving it a lacquered appearance.

The bog lantern is strongly fragrant. Its scent is sweet and heady, reminiscent of overripe fruit. Beneath the sweetness is the damp smell of wet bark and brackish water, with a faint sourness that becomes more pronounced as the blossom ages.

Bog lanterns are associated with those who vanish into Taisidon's swamps. A common tale holds that each flower marks a place where the swamp has claimed a life and that its amber glow is drawn from the last light seen by the victim before being pulled beneath the water.

Another superstition claims that a line of bog lanterns will lead a traveler to safety. The flowers often grow along the edges of hummocks and other slightly raised ground, but they are just as likely to appear beside unstable mud or other treacherous footing, inspiring the proverb, “Where bog lanterns glow, take care where you go.” As a result, the bog lantern has come to symbolize false reassurance: something beautiful that offers the promise of safety without any guarantee of rescue. The flower is sometimes invoked metaphorically in this sense.

Islanders leave bog lanterns at memorials for the dead, particularly for those whose bodies were never recovered from the swamp, as a reminder that the lost have not been forgotten.

Common Description

Enclosed within overlapping waxy bracts of deep amber and burnt orange, the bog lantern hangs in a pendulous cluster like a tiny lantern. Fine crimson veins glow through the translucent surfaces, surrounding a shadowed heart of wine-dark petals and pale golden stamens. Its heady fragrance of overripe fruit carries a faint sourness reminiscent of brackish water and fermentation.
