Some thoughts on banning and the banned list. · on 06/12/2012 09:25 PM CDT 2072
Before I start this post I want to make it crystal clear that if the replies spiral into the usual Theren sux Quarel sux theme the thread will be immediately closed. Keep that in mind please.

I want to post a few a thoughts on the banned list, how it came to be and how I believe it has gotten crazy.

Let me start by saying in the good old days people got banned for extraordinary reasons, killing a royal, noble or guild leader. If they weren't banned a few of them got guild consequences or even prison time that was longer than most people would stand for now based on the complaints I am seeing from a few deportations. A few additional bans were added as time went on but mostly the list was short and easily handled.

Then the Necromancer guild was released and it was no longer a matter of a GMPC necromancer that went back to his tower/lair/cave, it was a bunch of necromancer PCs all over the place. The long established RP for necromancers has always been they are outside the law/banned. So when confronted with this influx of necromancers all over the place, Therengian PCs wanted to know how to handle things and were told nothing has changed necromancers are not welcome in Therengia. They wanted a clear cut answer and they got one. Things went along for a while this way but the necromancer PCs didn't much care for the ban so they brought in help which got the help added on to the ban. Still things were not so bad, as for the most part the necromancers and their help knew when to call it a day and go back to doing what ever it is they do when not being evil in Therengia.

And then it got crazy. Other PCs with no investment in the ongoing RP choose to use Therengia's stance on necromancers and the ban on them as an excuse to jump in on the side of the poor oppressed necromancer and thier supporters. I am not saying all of them were just there to PvP with no aim to improve the RP but some no doubt were there for exactly that reason. And so it goes on to this day. I have seen many many examples of certain HLCs not even in being game when a necromancer/brigade RP event is going on and poof they suddenly arrive. Like wise I have also not seen certain HLCs in before I put a GMPC in game and within five minutes there they are, and they are using the banned list as an excuse for this behavior.

As a consequence of all this the banned list has grown and has become a burden. Also team good I feel is getting burnt out by the HLCs who really have no investment in the ongoing RP but are using the banned list as an excuse to slaughter PCs well below thier level. And team bad feels put upon when I used existing mechanics to enforce the law and the bans.

So where does that leave us? For one thing as Solomon said in the Qi folder certain parties using all this to be disruptive is a bad thing. Likewise using the ban to harass people hunting is also a bad thing. We have to find a middle ground without me having to retcon the RP in Therengia to all the sudden make it ok for Ned Necromancer to be there. I am open to CONSTRUCTIVE ideas and we will see where we can go from there but please reread what I wrote at the top of this post before you hit enter.
