Well, mining is meant to be dangerous. One way to ensure your safety is to mine slower, prospect more often to assess the danger or bring a friend so you can prospect twice. The messaging will usually show up before you are out of RT, but not always. This entire system was devised to complicate the process. You mine too much, and leave the area sitting there...oh so dangerously. Some unsuspecting miner walks up and ...well, fun ensues.
