I tested with your Empathy skills, and it looks like you are right on the edge of hard capping Caracals. The way critter defenses are calculated have changed slightly, so caracals now have ever so slightly less defenses in test than they do in prime. Since you were on the edge of hard capping them, that little difference pushed you from being able to learn (in prime) to not being able to learn (in test).
