Introduction

Lady of Elamiri Ayrell came through a thick dark curtain.

Ayrell smiles.

Ayrell says, "Good evening, and welcome to the Shoan a Sidelkuloa."

Ayrell says, "Tonight, we have a very special performance in store for you all. A production that was both devised and written as a collaborative effort between the incredibly talented Siendra Vauns'Arotru, Shaylynne Kendiahle, Senthic, and - to a much lesser degree of incredibleness - myself."

Ayrell blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

Ayrell says, "This performance is a lighthearted comedy of errors we hope you will all enjoy. That being said, as the show does run a bit longer than usual, we should not keep you waiting any longer."

Ayrell says, "So, without further ado, The Crystal City Players presents - Aim for the Heart."

Ayrell smiles graciously out at the audience, offering a graceful curtsy before turning to make her way off stage.

Act One

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The stage lights brighten just as the sound of hooves against the wooden boards clatter into existence. The eager snorts of the unseen horses serve to make the empty stage an uneasy setting, full of tense potential. Suddenly, the scene explodes into action."

(Senthic spurs his chestnut steed onto the stage, leaning forward determinedly. His lance is aimed straight towards his oncoming opponent.)

(Ayrell bursts onto the stage astride her own dappled mount, posture resolute and lance steady. The two opponents meet in the middle with a mighty clash, and Sir Camden is sent flying.)

(Senthic lands with a groan. He lies there a moment, gazing up at the ceiling before rising. The victor returns from where she had disappeared offstage, both horses in tow.)

Senthic haggardly says, "Sir Maiteus." Removing his helm, Sir Camden bows his head. "Good tilt."

(Ayrell removes her own helm to reveal cropped short hair and a neatly trimmed mustache. She smiles and bows her head in return.)

Ayrell roughly says, "It is always an honor, Sir Camden."

(Ayrell holds the reins of both horses in one palm, offering her free hand to Sir Camden. He takes it, regaining his feet with her help, and shakes his head as if clearing it.)

Senthic says, "Thank you," He takes one set of reins from Sir Maiteus, "for retrieving my horse."

(Senthic bows respectfully to his opponent, and they both lead their equine companions off stage.)

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The lights dim into near darkness as shadows are seen shuffling about on stage. When they brighten again, a single spotlight pinpoints two of the characters standing off to one side."

(Senthic doffs his helm and sweeps it towards Prince Auden with a flourish.)

Senthic says, "A worthy opponent, My Lord."

Ezerak distractedly says, "Worthy, indeed."

Ezerak asks, "Did you notice anything...peculiar... about him?"

Senthic dryly says, "Yes, that I finally lost a match to someone."

Senthic scowls to himself.

Ezerak says, "No, I meant...nevermind. You put forth a valiant effort, Sir Camden."

(Ezerak chuckles and pats Sir Camden on the back.)

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"As the two men confer quietly beneath the spotlight, a second brightens on the opposite side of the stage. Sir Maiteus and Lady Farrah are seen whispering and giggling, their voices growing louder as the attention is drawn upon them."

Shaylynne exclaims, "He was stunned, Maitane, I am quite sure he did not expect such a showing!"

Ayrell gruffly says, "No, I don't believe..."

Ayrell clears her throat.

Ayrell delicately says, "No, I do not believe he did..."

(Ayrell lifts her hand to check the false mustache above her lips to make sure it's still neatly in place.)

(Shaylynne covers her mouth and giggles while Lady Maitane laughs in mirthful reciprocation.)

Shaylynne dreamily says, "Almost a shame to knock him over like that, his face is nearly as pretty as your own."

Shaylynne smiles at Ayrell.

Ayrell blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

Ayrell bashfully says, "I was not expecting the prince to be here."

Shaylynne asks, "Is that such a terrible thing?"

Shaylynne peers quizzically at Ayrell.

Ayrell fidgets nervously.

Ayrell says, "It could be, if he were to learn my secret. We will need to be more careful."

Shaylynne says, "Everything will be fine. Besides, even if he did learn your secret, Lady Maitane, I do not believe anyone could love you less."

Ayrell says, "Let us hope you are right."

Act Two

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"Both spotlights fade on the pair of pairs, leaving the stage in complete darkness. A scuffle of movement echoes about the seating area before a single light returns to reveal Prince Auden and Sir Camden seated at the head table of a lavish dinner party, the grand ballroom filled with people as the two men lean in to hear each other speak over the din."

Ezerak studies the faces around him.

Ezerak quietly asks Senthic, "You haven't seen that knight around tonight, have you?" He grins mischievously and leans forward to teasingly ask, "You remember? The one who bested you this afternoon?"

Senthic scowls.

Senthic resignedly says, "You don't have to rub it in! And, now that you mention it, I have not seen him tonight. I thought surely he would show."

Ezerak says, "If for no other reason than to gloat! It's not every day we see you so brutally ejected from your horse..."

Senthic gazes at Ezerak.

Ezerak exclaims, "...So ruthlessly cut down - and in your prime!"

Senthic fixes Ezerak with an intent, predatory stare.

Ezerak says to Senthic, "It must still sting..."

Ezerak gazes at Senthic with a sympathetic look on his face.

Senthic sighs.

Senthic dryly asks, "Hmm?"

Ezerak says, "That massive bruise to your ego."

Ezerak appears to be trying hard not to grin.

Senthic gazes off into the distance.

Senthic pointedly says, "Oh, look, there is the knight in question! Why not go and inflict your sense of humor on him, and allow the rest of us to soothe our 'egos' with wine and silence."

Senthic waves a hand at Ezerak dismissively.

Ezerak laughs with delight, his eyes full of merriment.

Ezerak says to Senthic, "Alright, alright. I'll leave you to it. I'm sure Sir Maiteus will provide far more enlightening conversation at the moment, anyway." With a slight smile, he pats Camden's back and says, in a quieter tone, "I'll see you later, my friend. And before you lose yourself in your cups, don't forget about the hunt tomorrow morning."

Senthic grumbles.

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"Prince Auden leaves his friend, who is grinning despite himself, and makes his way across the room to greet Sir Maiteus, who has just arrived and is looking a bit overwhelmed."

(Shaylynne stands slightly behind Sir Maiteus, gazing about the lavish hall in wonder. Spotting Prince Auden walking towards them, she leans over and whispers into her flustered friend's ear.)

Shaylynne quietly says, "I do believe he is headed your way. I shall find us some seats and food, I am famished...Good luck, Lady...err Sir Maiteus."

(Shaylynne smiles at Sir Maiteus and Prince Auden upon his arrival, gathering the skirts of her gown and bobbing a quick curtsy before flouncing off to a table with a pair of empty chairs.)

(Ayrell bows respectfully, if not a bit nervously.)

Ayrell gruffly says, "Good Evening, Your Highness."

Ezerak warmly says to Ayrell, "And you, Sir Maiteus. I'm glad you are here tonight, I'd wanted to offer congratulations on your impressive win earlier." A loud voice breaks out over the softer conversation in demand of more wine. Auden chuckles, "Ah, I think Sir Camden may still be licking his wounds from the bottom of a glass."

Ezerak grins, revealing his dimples.

(Ayrell stifles her natural laugh just in time to emit a purposefully deep sounding one instead.)

Ayrell gruffly says, "Thank you, Sir. It is a great honor to compete in the audience of your court and he is a worthy opponent. A slight lean in the wrong direction and I was sure to be unseated myself."

Ezerak asks, "It looks like your... friend?... has found you a place to eat. Allow me to walk you over to her?"

Ayrell chuckles.

Ayrell says, "Yes, best friend, almost akin to a sister if I'd been fortunate enough to have one. I must confess in the realms of more serious relationships, I find myself unattached. Jousting has been my first and only love, so far."

Ayrell smiles.

(Ezerak looks thoughtful as they stride across the stage to where Lady Farrah sits demurely.)

Ezerak asks, "I see, and what about hunting?"

Ayrell cocks her head at Ezerak.

Ayrell curiously asks, "What about it?"

Ezerak asks, "Do you partake?"

Ayrell says, "To be perfectly honest, most of my life has been preoccupied with my knighthood. I am an exceptional one of those at the opportunity cost of becoming a mediocre hunter."

Ayrell ponders.

Ayrell laughingly says, "I suppose I'd be willing to give it a shot."

Ayrell grins.

(Ezerak grins quickly at the pun before returning to the more serious demeanor expected of his stature.)

Ezerak confidently says, "Well it's settled then, you will join us tomorrow morning at daybreak. Myself, Sir Camden, and one of my other regular jousters, Sir Drummond. If you are going to keep beating up everyone in my court, it would be good for you to get to know some of them."

Ezerak grins wryly.

(Ayrell nervously smoothes her mustache before catching herself and dropping her hand quickly.)

Ayrell gruffly says, "Yes, Your Highness. Of course."

(Ayrell bows her head to the prince as they reach the table.)

(Shaylynne looks up at the two "men", blushing furiously with a mouthful.)

Shaylynne gulps.

(Shaylynne daintily dabs at her face with a napkin.)

Shaylynne says, "Good Evening."

Ezerak says, "Lady Farrah."

Ezerak nods politely to Shaylynne.

Ezerak says, "I am returning your friend here and should take my leave to check on my other guests. I do hope you both enjoy the meal."

(Ezerak pats Maiteus on the back, allowing his hand to linger. As he wanders off, he lifts his chin, his nose twitching as if catching an unusual, yet pleasant, scent in the air, a look of utter confusion on his face, if only for a moment.)

(Ayrell takes her seat beside Lady Farrah.)

Shaylynne says to Ayrell, "Oh, you must tell me *everything*."

Act Three

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The lights dim and the curtain is drawn for a change of scenery. When they reopen, the prince sits upon his horse, followed by Sirs Camden, Maiteus, and Drummond on their own mounts. A realistic forest is depicted on a painted backdrop and each of them wields a hunting bow in hand."

(Senthic nocks his bow and aims at something in the distance, shooting an arrow into one of the stage wings.)

Senthic triumphantly exclaims, "I've got a fox!"

(Senthic valiantly gallops off behind one of the curtains to retrieve his trophy.)

Ezerak says, "Ah, his exuberance is back. I suppose he needed that after yesterday's competition."

(Ezerak flashes a quick grin at Sir Maiteus.)

(Nyrhin grins slyly, appearing to miss the exchange between Auden and the other knight beside him.)

Nyrhin asks, "Speaking of foxes, have either of you met Lady Maitane?"

Nyrhin arrogantly says, "She does not know it yet, but I've got plans to marry her one day."

Ayrell laughingly asks, "You don't say... and does this Lady Maitane have plans to marry you in return?"

Nyrhin scoffs.

Nyrhin confidently exclaims, "But of course!"

Nyrhin asks, "Look at me," he gestures to himself, "how could she not?"

(Ayrell mutters under her breath, face turned towards the audience, barely a whisper but loud enough to be faintly heard.)

Ayrell quietly says, "Looks aside, I could think of quite a few reasons."

(Nyrhin lifts a hand to shade his eyes from the rising sun.)

Nyrhin says, "I thought I saw antlers in that clearing. You two go on ahead, I am going to have a closer look."

(Nyrhin gives his mare's sides a gentle squeeze and starts her softly trotting offstage.)

Ezerak says, "And then there were two..."

Ezerak hesitantly says, "I didn't quite catch what you uttered to yourself, but you sounded...different. In fact, everything about you is different from any knight I've ever met."

Ayrell clears her throat.

Ayrell respectfully says, "Apologies, Your Highness, but I'm not at all sure what you mean by that."

Ayrell gruffly exclaims, "I think I heard something over there!"

(Ayrell spins her horse around and fumbles with her bow, firing off an aimless arrow at one of the trees along the backdrop. It lodges into the rear wall with a heavy thunk.)

Ayrell nods.

Ayrell awkwardly says, "Quick little buggers, they are..."

Ezerak chuckles.

Ezerak says, "Hunting is not so different from your jousting, you know. Take aim as you would your lance, the main difference being that the weapon is propelled by the strength of your arms and not the momentum of your horse."

(Ezerak looks thoughtfully at Sir Maiteus, who is glaring down at her traitorous bow. A small smile plays on Auden's lips.)

Ezerak says, "Why don't we call it for today and see how the others have done. I'd like to invite you for archery practice in a few days' time, and you are likely to feel much more confident next time."

(Ezerak guides his horse past Sir Maiteus to take the lead. As a soft breeze wafts past, his nostrils flare, a curious expression passing over his face.)

Ezerak asks, "Is that perfume I smell?"

Ayrell forces a grin and laughs nervously.

Ayrell deeply says, "All I smell are those flowers over there."

Ayrell crosses her arms and points in opposite directions.

Ezerak says, "Ahh, must be."

(Ezerak and Sir Maiteus leave the stage one behind another, in the direction of Sirs Camden and Drummond.)

Act Four

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The curtains draw closed and open once again, to a scene set with a vanity, a regal suit of armor, and Prince Auden reclined on a chaise with a servant grooming his facial hair. Sir Camden strolls in, his face brightened by a cheerful grin."

Senthic exclaims, "I have made up my mind, Your Highness. The jousting finals are coming up and I am here to tell you, I am going to win!"

Ezerak chuckles.

Ezerak teasingly says, "Catching a fox on a hunt does nothing to improve your aim with a lance."

Senthic says, "Ah, but it proves Sir Maiteus is not without fault. Did you see him with that bow? It was almost as if he'd never touched one before in his life."

Ezerak says, "That will change after today, Camden. I've extended an invitation for Sir Maiteus to join me for a bit of practice."

Senthic smirks.

Senthic says, "It's almost as if you -want- me to lose."

Ezerak exclaims, "Not at all!"

Ezerak grins, revealing his dimples.

Ezerak says, "It's more that I find myself wanting -him- to win."

Senthic peers quizzically at Ezerak.

Senthic curiously says, "You've taken quite a shining to that one."

(Ezerak holds his hand up, signaling his servant to stop shaving his face and dismisses him.)

Ezerak sits up.

Ezerak seriously says, "I see potential in him."

Senthic jokingly asks, "Are you sure that's -all- you see?"

Ezerak acts puzzled.

Ezerak asks, "What do you mean?"

Senthic shrugs.

Senthic laughingly says, "With the way you've been on about that knight these days, one might think you were in -love- with him."

(Ezerak's laughter mingles with Sir Camden's briefly before stopping abruptly as if struck by a deep and sudden thought.)

Ezerak gazes off into the distance.

Ezerak says, "Sir Camden, I think I would like a few minutes alone. Tell my barber to wait outside the doors. I'll call him in when I'm ready to continue."

Senthic frowns.

Senthic says, "Your Highness, I didn't mean to overstep..."

Ezerak sternly exclaims, "Enough!"

Ezerak stands up.

(Ezerak closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose.)

Ezerak sighs apologetically.

Ezerak wearily says, "Forgive me, my friend. I have a great deal on my mind and an appointment to prepare for with Sir Maiteus in only a short while. I will see you at dinner."

Senthic says, "Very well then."

(Senthic bows to the prince, looking both confused and concerned as he turns on his heel to see himself out of the room.)

(Ezerak strides over to lean against the vanity, gazing at himself in the mirror, brows furrowed, a bit of shaving cream still smeared across his cheek.)

Ezerak quietly asks himself, "In love with Sir Maiteus?"

(Ezerak angles forward to peer closer at his reflection.)

Ezerak quietly says, "Surely, that can't be what it is."

Ezerak says, "Love isn't the only reason to enjoy someone's company. Perhaps it is merely his willingness to hold a casual conversation without boasting about women and winning. I am quite fond of my dear friends, but I do find comfort in the way he speaks to me in return..."

(Ezerak cants his head slightly, clearly curious by something only he can see in the mirror.)

Ezerak quietly says to himself, "No. There *is* something else. Something I'm missing."

(Ezerak turns away from the vanity, looking a bit lost. After a moment, his eyes open slightly, realization dawning.)

Ezerak snaps his fingers.

Ezerak says, "That scent!" He turns back toward the mirror, leaning forward again to address his reflection. "Sir Maiteus said it was the flowers, but I've smelled it before - on him. At dinner, after the joust."

(Ezerak stares at the glass a moment longer, clearly still racking his brain for another detail that lingers just out of his reach.)

Ezerak quietly says, "What else... there is something else..."

(Ezerak glances across the room at his own set of armor standing in the corner, his eyes going wide.)

Ezerak says, "His armor. I didn't pay it any mind at the time, but it... it had -curves-. Why would his armor have..."

Ezerak squints.

Ezerak curiously asks, "Am I falling for a man, or is Maiteus," he shakes his head, blinking in disbelief, "... could he be a...woman?"

Act Five

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The stage lights dim as the prince continues muttering to himself conspiratorially. The quiet bumping of scenery being changed fills the transition until the lights come up to reveal an archery range. Targets are set up on one side of the stage while Prince Auden and Sir Maiteus stand close together on the other."

Ayrell emphatically says, "No, I am quite sure I know exactly where to hold the bow, Your Highness."

Ezerak rigidly says, "Of course, Sir Maiteus, but perhaps if you would just try to hold it -."

(Ezerak yelps as Sir Maiteus slaps his hand lightly, dislodging Auden's hold from the weapon. Frustrated, he heaves a heavy sigh, averting his scowl to direct it toward the audience.)

Ezerak grumpily exclaims, "Surely I am correct that this is a lady knight, from their stubbornness alone!"

(Ayrell glances suspiciously at the prince's indistinct grumbling, before setting herself up in a position to aim her bow. She takes a few uneven breaths, trying to steady her hands, before she lets her arrow fly. It soars over the targets and a loud *crash* can be heard off-stage.)

Ayrell winces.

Ayrell clears her throat.

Ayrell lightly asks, "And how would you... recommend I hold it?"

(Ezerak smirks and steps back towards Sir Maiteus. He holds his arms out towards the knight.)

Ezerak asks, "May I?"

(Ayrell tenses, but nods.)

(Ezerak wraps one arm around Maiteus, molding his hand over hers that holds the string. His other hand shifts her fingers along the shaft of the bow, and he uses his fluid motions to bring the bow up. They are so close now they are cheek to cheek, both staring ahead determinedly.)

Ezerak softly says, "Now inhale as you draw your arrow..."

(Ayrell blinks, having been forgetting to breathe altogether, and inhales deeply as she draws back her arrow. Prince Auden moves with her, guiding her posture.)

Ezerak says, "Good, now... both eyes open. See your target, chin up, that's it. And on the exhale..."

(Ayrell releases her arrow as she breathes out, watching it fly true. It lands on the furthest bullseye, dead center. She turns to the prince, beaming.)

Ayrell excitedly exclaims, "A bullseye! Oh, well taught, Your Highness, thank you!"

Ezerak gawks at Ayrell.

Ayrell nervously asks, "Your Highness? Is something wrong?"

(Ezerak reaches up slowly and grips the edge of Sir Maiteus's mustache, which has come loose. The knight jerks back in surprise, only serving to pull away from the mustache altogether. It falls free from Maiteus's face and hangs limply in the prince's hand.)

Ayrell blushes furiously!

Ayrell quickly says, "It's not what you think, Your Highness."

Ezerak wryly asks, "Oh? What is it, then... you simply can't grow a proper mustache?"

(Ezerak tosses the fake facial hair aside and steps towards Maiteus.)

Ezerak quietly asks, "Or is it that you are, in fact, Lady Maitane?"

(Ayrell appears to want to argue more, but her shoulders droop as she resigns herself to the truth.)

Ayrell dismally says, "Yes, Your Highness. I am."

(Ezerak lifts Maitane's chin with a gentle hand, gazing into her eyes.)

Ezerak softly says, "I will not tell anyone, My Lady. I have come to respect you far too much. But we have much to discuss."

Ayrell gives a slight nod.

Ayrell asks, "Yes, Your Highness. Thank you... but aren't you upset?"

Ezerak laughingly exclaims, "Quite relieved, actually!"

Ayrell peers quizzically at Ezerak.

Ayrell asks, "Whatever do you mean?"

Ezerak bashfully says, "Ah, well, you see... over these past few weeks I've been finding myself becoming quite smitten with you. And while I'm all for trying new things, it's nice to know my heart was aiming true."

Ezerak grins wryly.

Ayrell looks at Ezerak and blushes.

Ayrell says, "I... you... that is..."

(Ezerak laughs at the lady's stammering and swoops in, silencing her with a kiss. She tenses before relaxing into it, the two of them embracing.)

(Senthic walks in, looking over a handful of papers in his hand. He looks up, poised to ask for his prince's advice, and stops.)

Senthic gazes at Ezerak.

Senthic gazes at Ayrell.

Senthic mutters something into the air about knew it.

(Senthic sighs heavily and walks back out, leaving the lights to dim on the passionate pair.)

Act Six

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"Giggling can be heard in the darkness of the stage, and the lights come up on Lady Maitane and Lady Farrah. They walk side by side, heads close together as they speak."

Shaylynne exclaims, "Oh, you absolute scandal! But what will you do now? Maitane, you could be a *princess*!"

Shaylynne squeals!

Ayrell snorts, loudly.

Ayrell says, "I don't want to be a princess. I want to joust."

(Shaylynne stares flatly at her friend, sighing.)

Shaylynne says, "Maitane, you can't just... joust your whole life. And certainly not when the prince knows your secret."

Ayrell sighs.

Ayrell says, "You're right, I know... but I've come so far in this tournament. I at least need to see it through to the end. I'm sure Prince Auden will allow it..."

Ayrell nibbles on her fingers contemplatively.

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"From the opposite side of the stage, Prince Auden and Sir Camden appear, walking towards the two women. The gentlemen bow as they draw near, and the ladies sink into deep curtsies in response."

Ezerak asks, "Ah, Lady Maitane, Lady Farrah. A lovely day for a walk, as I see you agree?"

Shaylynne asks, "Yes, a beautiful day indeed! We simply couldn't stay hidden inside, could we, Lady Maitane?"

Shaylynne appears to be trying hard not to grin.

(Ayrell scowls at her friend before flashing a dazzling smile at the two men.)

Ayrell says, "Yes, just so. And I have business elsewhere that I leave for in the morning, so Lady Farrah and I were spending the day together."

Senthic says, "How unfortunate, you will be missing the jousting finals! And the prince's favored knight is due back in the morning. You'll miss meeting him, as well."

Ezerak blushes, the tips of his ears turning a deep shade of red.

Ezerak quietly says, "He's not my favored... he's just very good..."

Senthic says, "Oh, don't hide your feelings on my account!" He gives the prince a friendly pat on the back. "I know where I stand! Or lie, after my unhorsing, I'm sure."

Senthic grins wryly.

(Shaylynne hides her barely contained laughter behind her hand as she watches both the prince and Lady Maitane shift uncomfortably. She turns her bright eyes to Sir Camden.)

Shaylynne says to Senthic, "Do not worry, Sir Camden. I will be sure to cheer for you doubly tomorrow."

Senthic beams at Shaylynne!

Senthic valiantly exclaims, "And with your support, my Lady, I am sure to find my victory!"

(Senthic bows low to Lady Farrah, taking her hand and brushing a debonair kiss across her knuckles. He draws back with a wink.)

Shaylynne smiles shyly at Sir Camden, pink tinging her cheeks.

Ayrell glances at Shaylynne.

Ayrell glances at Senthic.

Ayrell slowly asks, "Well, we... should be moving along. Will we see you both at dinner tonight?"

Ezerak says, "Most certainly! Enjoy your walk, good ladies. Until this evening..."

(Ezerak dashes another bow, nudging Camden into one before they continue their stroll. As the prince passes by Maitane, he drops his voice.)

Ezerak quietly says to Ayrell, "You smell exquisite today, my Lady."

(Ayrell blushes furiously and playfully bats the prince away, thankful that their companions are still too busy mooning over each other to notice the exchange. Still, she can't hide her smile as the two pairs walk away from each other and offstage.)

Act Seven

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The stage goes dark, and the scraping of scenery accompanies the transition. The scent of food fills the air as the buzz of voices begins as the actors take their positions. When the lights illuminate the stage, a massive feast has been set out and everyone mingles merrily."

(Shaylynne cranes her neck to look over the crowd.)

Shaylynne distractedly asks, "Have you seen Sir Camden yet this evening?"

Ayrell glances at Shaylynne.

Ayrell gives Shaylynne a studious look, as if committing her to memory.

Ayrell curiously says, "I was unaware we were looking for him."

Shaylynne blushes a bright red color.

Shaylynne bashfully says, "We are not looking -for- him, per se. It was more of a... curiosity."

Ayrell laughs softly, trying to hide her amusement.

Ayrell says, "He is a handsome man, Lady Farrah, if not occasionally a bit oblivious," she chuckles, smiling sympathetically at her friend. "If it makes you feel any better, I can think of several worse suitors you could choose."

Ayrell grins at Shaylynne.

(Shaylynne daintily brings her hand up to conceal a soft laugh behind it. Suddenly, her smile fades, her eyes going wide, nudging Lady Maitane to direct her attention to the approaching figure of Sir Drummond.)

Shaylynne quietly says, "Speaking of worse suitors..."

Ayrell gasps!

(Ayrell lifts her gloved hand to shield her eyes as if hiding her face will somehow make her invisible.)

Ayrell quietly says, "I do not wish to speak with that pompous prig."

(Shaylynne lowers her voice to whisper under her breath.)

Shaylynne quietly says, "Too late."

Shaylynne smiles forcibly at their unwanted guest, dipping into a polite curtsy in feigned pleasure at Sir Drummond's arrival.

Shaylynne says to Nyrhin, "Good evening, Sir Drummond. You do us a great honor with your company."

Nyrhin bows to Ayrell.

Nyrhin just took the hand of Ayrell and gently kissed the back of it.

Nyrhin says, "The honor, I assure you, is entirely Lady Maitane's."

(Ayrell stares down at her hand where it remains in Drummond's grasp.)

Ayrell wrinkles her nose.

Ayrell says, "I suppose I should be flattered, then."

Nyrhin says, "Understandably so," he glances at Lady Farrah, seeming to only just remember she is there. "If you wouldn't mind, Milady. I'd like to speak with Lady Maitane in private."

Ayrell blinks.

(Ayrell casts a worried look at Lady Farrah.)

Ayrell says to Nyrhin, "Surely, Sir Drummond, there is nothing you could say to me in private that cannot be spoken in front of my dear friend."

Nyrhin shrugs.

Nyrhin says, "The request was merely a formality. If you prefer Lady Farrah stand as witness to your good fortune, I've no complaints about an audience."

(Nyrhin holds firm to Lady Maitane's hand where it remains in his grasp.)

Nyrhin says to Ayrell, "From the moment we met, Lady Maitane, there has been no doubt in my mind that I am the only man for you."

Ayrell cringes.

Ayrell uneasily says to Nyrhin, "Please, if I may stop you there..."

(Nyrhin holds his hand up to prevent Lady Maitane from speaking.)

Nyrhin shakes his head.

Nyrhin pompously says, "I can see you are in shock, and coquetry is, of course, the ladylike response to such an advantageous offer as I have clearly come to make, but let us not waste time on compulsory flirtations when we both know you have already made up your mind to accept."

(Ayrell pulls hard to try and retract her hand from Sir Drummond's grasp, but is unable to break free.)

Ayrell tersely says, "I have done no such thing, Sir."

Nyrhin blinks at Ayrell.

Nyrhin says, "Your modesty is to be admired, My Lady, but it is entirely unnecessary."

(Shaylynne's eyes scan the room almost desperately.)

Shaylynne says, "Oh, look! There is Sir Camden and the prince."

(Shaylynne rises on her tiptoes, her arm waving distractedly at the crowd as a spotlight brightens to reveal Sir Camden and Prince Auden conversing on the other side of the room.)

(Senthic's eyes light up as he catches sight of Lady Farrah waving to them. His brow furrows as he notices her urgency, however.)

Senthic says, "Your Highness, I believe we may be needed..."

(Ezerak glances to where his friend's gaze has settled, puzzled. Upon seeing the discomfort on Lady Maitane's face and Drummond's firm grasp on her hand, the prince scowls.)

Ezerak stormily says, "Yes, we most certainly are."

(Ezerak and Sir Camden begin moving quickly through the crowd to where the awkward trio stand.)

(Nyrhin, who has clearly been droning on about himself through the exchange judging by the looks on the women's faces, can be heard clearly once more.)

Nyrhin arrogantly says, "...and so all that is to say that despite my highest honors and strong lineage, it is *you* I have chosen to be my wife, Lady Maitane. We shall make arrangements immediately. I am sure you are eager to bear the children of such an exemplary husband."

Ayrell gazes silently at Nyrhin.

Senthic says, "Lady Farrah! How wonderful to see you again."

Senthic bows to Shaylynne.

Senthic just took the hand of Shaylynne and gently kissed the back of it.

Shaylynne curtsies to Senthic.

Shaylynne says, "Sir Camden."

Shaylynne smiles nervously.

Shaylynne glances at Nyrhin.

Shaylynne glances at Ayrell.

Ezerak nods to Nyrhin.

Ezerak says, "Sir Drummond. Lady Maitane."

(Ezerak bows to Lady Maitane, offering his hand toward her with an expectant look at Sir Drummond who is still holding her in his grasp.)

(Nyrhin obediently releases Lady Maitane, motioning her toward Prince Auden as if to give her permission to greet him.)

Ezerak just took the hand of Ayrell and gently kissed the back of it.

Ayrell curtsies demurely to Ezerak.

(Ezerak's eyes hold Lady Maitane's, filled with concern.)

Ezerak asks, "The Lady appears distraught. Has something happened about which I should be aware?"

Nyrhin says, "As a matter of fact, yes. I believe congratulations are in order, as I have just asked Lady Maitane to be my wife."

Ayrell smiles with strained sweetness.

Ayrell says, "And I have just declined him."

Nyrhin gawks at Ayrell.

Senthic ponders.

Senthic says, "I say, it seems an odd event to celebrate, but... to each his own."

(Senthic shrugs and gives Sir Drummond a jovial pat on the back.)

Senthic says, "Congratulations, Sir Drummond! I wish you all the best in your continued bachelorhood."

Senthic smiles.

Nyrhin blinks.

Nyrhin splutters.

Ezerak asks, "Well, then. As it sounds like your business with the Lady has concluded, might I be so bold as to steal her away?"

Ayrell says to Ezerak, "You may," she glances over her shoulder at Sir Drummond whose face has turned an unattractive shade of scarlet. "I bid you a good evening, Sir Drummond... and best of luck at the tournament tomorrow."

(Ayrell's eyes glint with a secretive twinkle.)

Ayrell curtsies gracefully to Nyrhin.

Ayrell nods to Ezerak.

Ayrell smiles at Ezerak.

Ayrell asks Ezerak, "Shall we?"

(Ezerak links arms with Lady Maitane, leaving a still sputtering Drummond behind as Sir Camden and Lady Farrah go their own way.)

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The stage lights darken over the banquet room only to lighten on the opposite side of the stage to reveal an empty corridor where Prince Auden and Lady Maitane enter through the door."

(Ezerak casts a cautious look up and down the hall to make sure they are alone. Content that they are, he turns toward Lady Maitane, smiling, his head leaning in for a kiss.)

(Ayrell lifts two fingers to press against Prince Auden's lips before they can reach hers, looking around nervously to make sure no one followed them.)

Ayrell blushes, the tips of her ears turning a delicate scarlet hue.

Ayrell quietly says, "We must be cautious, Your Highness. I may be pretending to be a knight, but I am still a lady with a reputation to keep."

Ezerak quietly says, "Forgive me. I could not help myself."

Ayrell smiles at Ezerak.

(Ayrell gives another quick look around, seeming to make up her mind as she rises on her tiptoes to kiss Prince Auden.)

Ayrell bashfully says, "I could not help myself either."

Ezerak gazes fondly at Ayrell.

(Ezerak's smile fades suddenly.)

Ezerak somberly says, "There is something I was hoping to speak with you about."

Ayrell frowns.

Ayrell worriedly asks, "Is something the matter?"

Ezerak shakes his head.

Ezerak asks, "Not yet. But, I fear there... could be," he sighs, dejectedly. "I am concerned for your safety if you ride in the joust tomorrow. Might there be anything I could say that would convince you to withdraw?"

Ayrell gazes sadly at Ezerak.

Ayrell apologetically asks, "I am sorry, Your Highness, but there is not. I have come too far in this competition to withdraw now. And, besides... would you really deny me the opportunity to see Sir Drummond knocked on his backside?"

Ezerak says, "You could see it from the seats with me. I'm sure Sir Camden could make it so."

Ayrell shakes her head.

Ayrell says, "After this evening, I would much rather see it done myself."

Ayrell smiles sympathetically, gently lifting her hand to rest it against Prince Auden's cheek.

Ayrell softly says to Ezerak, "I will be fine. I promise."

Ezerak smiles sadly.

Ezerak says, "I will hold you to it."

Ayrell smiles at Ezerak.

Ayrell playfully says, "Sir Maiteus is a man of his word."

Ayrell winks.

Ayrell says, "We should be getting back before anyone notices how long we have been gone," starts to turn away, pausing suddenly as if struck by a sudden thought as she slowly turns back around. "There is one more thing, however."

Ezerak raises an eyebrow.

Ezerak asks, "Another kiss?"

Ezerak grins mischievously.

Ayrell laughs softly, trying to hide her amusement.

Ayrell shakes her head.

Ayrell asks, "No, though that does sound lovely," she blushes, "but I was thinking something else. You know it is customary for a knight to ride with a token of their love's favor. Might there be a token I could... pass along... to Sir Maiteus? From you?"

Ayrell gazes hopefully at Ezerak.

Ezerak smiles, revealing the dimples in his cheeks.

Ezerak ponders.

Ezerak pats himself down looking for something!

(Ezerak reaches into his pocket to retrieve a monogrammed handkerchief, offering it to Lady Maitane with a smile.)

Ezerak asks, "Carry it with honor, My Lady. Or should I say... Sir?"

(Ayrell accepts the handkerchief with a smile, bringing it to her lips to brush a soft kiss over the fabric.)

Ayrell says, "It shall bring me luck, Your Highness. You just wait and see."

Ezerak smiles, revealing the dimples in his cheeks.

Ezerak says, "I've no doubt it will. Just... be careful. Please."

Ayrell nods to Ezerak.

Ayrell smiles one last time at Prince Auden, blowing him a kiss before disappearing back through the door into the banquet room.

Ezerak sighs wistfully.

Act Eight

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The lights fade on the scene, a lingering sound of dinner conversation hanging on the air, slowly waning as everything goes quiet aside from the rustle and scrape of props in the darkness."

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"Suddenly the thunder of hooves, the clash of lance upon armor, and a dull thud can be heard in the darkness. Murmurs and cheers accompany the unseen tournament until a distant voice calls, "Sir Camden takes the first quarterfinal match! To determine his opponent for our final match, up now, Sir Drummond! Versus! Sir Maiteus!""

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The lights come up fully on the stage, now set as the jousting arena with stands in the background. Prince Auden sits with Lady Farrah in the center, watching intently."

(Nyrhin urges his steed onto the stage first, leaning low and thrusting his lance out purposefully.)

(Ayrell appears from the opposite side of the stage, steering her mount towards Sir Drummond, lance positioned to meet him.)

(Nyrhin's lance connects with a glancing blow to Sir Maiteus's shoulder, but it is not enough to deter the other knight's lance from catching him squarely in the chest. With a cry Drummond flies from his horse, landing in an undignified heap.)

(Ayrell allows herself a triumphant yell as her horse carries her offstage once more.)

(Nyrhin stands, removing his helm and throwing it angrily to the ground. He glowers in the direction Sir Maiteus went before reclaiming his helmet and skulking off to the opposite side.)

Shaylynne laughingly says, "Poor Drummond was still too wounded from Lady Maitane's rejection last night that he couldn't concentrate today, I'm sure."

Ezerak laughs!

Ezerak says, "Indeed, I am sure that is what it was. Not at all due to lack of talent or finesse."

(Shaylynne stifles her giggle, though she stops abruptly as the herald calls for the final match.)

Shaylynne quietly says, "Ah. Sir Camden against Sir Maiteus. Here is where our loyalties split, Your Highness."

Ezerak says, "They are well-matched."

Ezerak glances at Shaylynne.

Ezerak says, "Against each other, that is."

Shaylynne smiles softly.

Shaylynne gently says, "They are well-matched with us, as well, Your Highness. Now shush, it's time."

Shaylynne leans forward.

Ezerak nibbles on his fingers contemplatively.

(Senthic's steed bursts from the side of the stage, the knight set in a determined position as his lance leads the way.)

(Ayrell's horse leaps forward from the opposite end and the two knights barrel towards each other, both leaning to the left.)

(Ayrell rides swiftly past Sir Camden, who blocks her lance at the last second. It shatters upon impact with his shield.)

(Senthic's own weapon barely misses Sir Maiteus's plate armor, the sound of wood scraping on metal echoing throughout the theater when it grazes her side.)

(Ayrell grabs a new lance and takes a facing position across the stage from her opponent, preparing for another round.)

(Senthic gives his horse a kick and both jousters gallop towards each other once again.)

(Ayrell's reaches center stage and uses her shield to deliver a brutal hit to Sir Camden's lance, knocking it loose from his grip as it falls to the ground.)

(Ayrell leans forward, the tip of her polearm sending out a resounding clang against the sternum of Sir Camden, sending the stunned knight backwards off his mount. As Camden clatters to the ground, Maiteus vaults from her own horse with a loud "whoop!," removing her helmet to beam at the wildly cheering crowd in victory.)

(Senthic drags himself to a standing position, catching his slight stumble before freeing himself of his own helm to gaze proudly at the champion before him. He strides to where Maiteus stands, pausing nearby so as not to interrupt the knight's revelry.)

(Ayrell turns, smiling broadly at Camden. She proffers her hand to her vanquished opponent.)

(Senthic gently pushes Maiteus's hand aside, motioning her to come closer. Without waiting for her to move, he steps in to embrace her, one cheek pressing against hers in a sign of brotherhood.)

Senthic proudly says, "You and our prince are a fine set indeed. He should be honored to have you at his side."

Ayrell blushes furiously!

Ayrell shyly says, "Sir Camden..."

(Senthic pulls away, holding his hand up to stop Maiteus from saying anything more, their sudden separation causing Maiteus's mustache to catch on Camden's beard. Lifting his gaze to smile at the other knight, Camden freezes.)

Senthic blinks at Ayrell.

Ayrell blinks at Senthic.

Senthic blinks at Ayrell.

(Senthic lifts his hand to where the traitorous mustache hangs from his face, leaving the lady knight suddenly quite clean shaven. Dawning fills Camden's eyes as he pulls the fake facial hair off his lip, practically lunging at Maiteus to reapply it before anyone else notices.)

(Ayrell shakes her head, determination replacing the shock on her face, her slender, armor-clad hand rising to intercept Camden's desperate attempts at re-concealing her true identity.)

Ayrell quietly says, "It is alright, Sir Camden. Perhaps with this victory I can finally reveal myself."

(Ayrell moves away, bringing one hand up to remove her wig, shaking her long locks free. With confidence she steps forward.)

Senthic frets.

(Ayrell sets her shoulders, facing the crowd dauntlessly, their previous shouts of excitement turning to angry jeers around her.)

(Shaylynne covers her mouth with one shaking hand, her other gripping the arm of her seat in a white-knuckled hold.)

(Ezerak half rises from his seat, leaning forward as though ready to lunge to Lady Maitane's protection.)

Ayrell loudly exclaims, "Good people!" She winces as the angry shouts seem to grow in volume. "I never meant to deceive you. I only meant to follow my heart, as every knight here has!"

Ayrell proudly asks, "It is not right to bar these women you all claim to cherish from being the best that they can be!" The crowd quiets slightly as the women take in her words, the men looking somewhat chagrined. "Have I not proven that the fairer gender is, in fact, quite capable of just as much as any man?"

(Ayrell spreads her hands in front of her beseechingly, letting the people murmur amongst themselves.)

(Ezerak rises fully, striding with haste and determination to join Lady Maitane in the lists. Once there, he offers her a proud smile, taking one of her hands in his while the other claps gently onto her shoulder. Giving her an assured nod, he turns to address the still murmuring crowd.)

Ezerak firmly exclaims, "Hear me, my people!" He lifts Lady Maitane's hand up high for all to see as the crowd quiets at his command. "This courageous young woman has just won your jousting championship! Against all odds set against her by society, she has defeated our bravest knights and that, I daresay, is worthy of praise - not ridicule!"

Ezerak smiles, turning to Lady Maitane.

Ezerak says, "Kneel, Lady Maitane. And allow me to bestow upon you the honor you have so clearly earned for yourself today."

Ayrell kneels down.

(Ayrell gazes nervously up at Prince Auden through her lashes, taking care to make sure her head remains lowered with respect.)

(Ezerak draws the sword from its sheath at his hip, holding it in front of him.)

Ezerak says, "By the power vested in me as your prince - and by all the witnesses here - I dub thee...," he lowers the flat of his blade to one of Lady Maitane's shoulders, and then the other, "Dame Maitane, Lady Knight, and jousting champion of this fair kingdom."

(Ezerak stretches out a hand, helping the Dame Maitane to rise. He turns her with him to face the audience.)

Ezerak exclaims, "Your victor!"

Ayrell stands up.

(Ayrell blushes furiously as - slowly at first, but with rising fervor - the crowd applauds for this wild turn of events. She bows deeply, catches Lady Farrah's eye, and beams at her friend. At Lady Farrah's side, Sir Camden stands comfortably to cheer for his opponent louder than anyone else.)

(Ayrell startles as Prince Auden leans in close to her, speaking quietly into her ear.)

Ezerak softly says, "If you will allow me just one more title to bestow upon you today..."

(Ezerak sweeps himself back and drops to one knee before Maitane, laughing joyfully at her expression of shock. The din of the crowd grows even louder as they bear witness to their prince choosing a bride to rival any other.)

Ezerak fervently says, "Dame Maitane, honor me with a victory of my own today by accepting my hand in marriage. I have fallen helplessly in love with your spirit and can think of no other that could stand with me in leading these people."

(Ayrell, overwhelmed with the day, finds words escape her for a long moment. The prince even begins to look concerned before Maitane's mind finally catches up to the events.)

Ayrell quickly exclaims, "Yes! Yes, of course, I... yes!"

(Ayrell pulls Auden up to her, kissing him passionately.)

Shaylynne wryly says, "That Maitane...she certainly has the best aim I've ever seen."

Shaylynne flashes a quick grin at Senthic.

Shaylynne teasingly says, "You could learn a thing or two from her."

(Senthic laughs, pulling Farrah to him as the celebration continues.)

Senthic says, "Well, let me see what I can do about that..."

You hear a voice recite from the shadows:

"The curtain closes just as Camden swoops in on Farrah for his own impassioned embrace. The din on stage quiets, allowing Siendra to slip from behind the curtain to stand front and center in one lone light."
