UNVEILING THE MYSTERY OF THE PLAGUE WRAITHS Bioexorcist Karthor invited adventurers on an expedition to Hrendh Skogar, in order to seek out the plague wraiths, the creatures that first appeared when wild magic began. Participants fought the wraiths and were advised to abstain from using sorcery. I arrived a bit late for the expedition, but Karthor, Nawain, Briaen, and Dame Elurora filled me in on the details. "Mostly it was an attempt to see where the plague wraiths fit into all this," Karthor said. "If ya recall, folks were sayin' they appeared all over when magic first went out an' then came back all wild-like. Some folks've been sayin' they think there's somethin' else at work besides the major cosmic beings behind the messengers we've been dealin' with. I tend to agree, so we were hopin' to find out somethin' about that as well." According to Nawain, they quickly dispatched some of the usual plague wraiths that are found around the area. Then suddenly everything fell silent. Strangely silent. An angry whisper echoed all around them, damning them. A raven circled far above, cawwing in agitation. The raven was joined by a welkin, who swooped down before disappearing in a golden haze. The raven fluttered awkwardly a moment, then also vanished in a golden haze. The malevolent whispering returned, louder. The whispering intensified, echoing all around them. Louder and louder, the furious whispers continued. Then suddenly, silence. Malformed plague wraiths appeared in great numbers. They were more difficult opponents than the normal wraiths, but finally the group managed to defeat them. After the battle, the adventurers felt what Karthor believed to be Kertigen's attention on them, and his pleasure in a job well done. They felt his satisfaction that the land was purified, imperfections removed from the jewel of his heart. Far above, the raven and the welkin once again soared, and the adventurers felt their attention on them for a sharp, sublime moment. Then the two vanished against the horizon. "There are few things that all thirty-nine agree upon, but the undead is one of those things," Briaen said. "The whispers we heard were of whatever keeps them here. The silence, a noted experience of what it means to be undead in the presence of Their glory." For Karthor's part, he was pleased with the findings of the expedition. "I'm satisfied that we confirmed that there's somethin' else in play associated with the plague wraiths," he said. "No clues as to what it might be though." The Hrendh Skogar expedition offered insights into the mysterious forces behind the plague wraiths. While we were unable to definitively identify the source of their influence, the encounter with the undead and the subsequent divine presence left us with more questions. As Elanthia continues to grapple with the consequences of wild magic, further investigation into these enigmatic creatures may be crucial in understanding the ongoing crisis.
