I'm not sure we completely ironed out all those particulars, but there was certainly talk about being able to pick up the previous year's little upgrade toy, but not to be able to upgrade it for the first time until the next year. In that case, if you did miss a year you'd be unable to upgrade the missed year's toy fully, but would be able to get at least the base model.
