Workability only affects how hard the item is to craft. It applies no experience modifier.

However, if a template is just beyond your skill to mastercraft, using bronze will often let you cap it - and learn the best you can for each action. Then as the item becomes too easy you can move onto using MC steel, followed by LC steel and HC steel to extend how long it trains you the best it can.

And yes Apu, I can understand some of the difficulties due to a lack of harder items to craft. Introducing more tools, more weapon and armor types, and more stonecarved items and furniture should help with that over the coming months.
