I would have to pour over the calculations again to give a more specific answer, and at the moment I am too busy working on the new crafting systems. Just know that the system was designed so you never "must" know techniques to train well. But to train "optimally"? Sure, techniques do help you with more optimal training. Much like joining the Barbarian Guild helps you rip peoples' limbs off, heh.

Techniques exist to make life easier and give bonuses large enough to warrant spending slots on them and choosing a career or hobby. At some point when all the systems are out, and mech has split, everything will feel more complete and balanced, and people with 2000 ranks of mech lore could be left with 4 new skills sitting at 0 ranks to work back up again. We're getting there, but it takes time.
