You do realize that all metal armor has cloth/leather underneath it right? Chainmail is cloth + metal. Plate is leather + metal. Anything that deflects or absorbs the fire/cold/electricity is going to result in you taking less damage. The heavier armors offer more of this, hence they protect better.
