The amount drained is dependent upon a number of factors, including skillset, and the character's [[Wisdom]]. While not directly helpful, the character's {{stat|Intelligence}} does play a part, as the amount converted to ranks is static, and Intelligence will increase the size of the experience pool, thus allowing for a longer time in which the skill can pulse.
Field experience drain is no longer determined by a percentage base, thus you will learn the same amount for each pulse if you were at dabbling to if you were at mind locked. However, the field experience pool state is based on percentage. For example if your pool has 50 points available and you fill all 50, you will be mind locked, but if your pool has 100 points available, you would be at scrutinizing. But, if your pulse size is 5 points, in both situations you will convert 5 points to your skill. Under the old system, experience gain was based on a percentage of the pool size, that is no longer. It is recommended to keep a skill above learning to gain full experience conversion at every pulse.

Both experience pool sizes and drain rates are based on an 8 rank rotation. The first rank will convert the most field experience to ranks per pulse, with the second rank less so, the third even less so, onto the eighth rank which is the worst, and is commonly known as a "wall rank." After the wall rank, the cycle restarts and acts just like the first rank.

How much of this cycle is actually used depends on the character's [[skillset]] placement, as dictated by their guild. If a skill is the character's primary skillset, it uses the full 8 rank cycle, if it is secondary, it only uses the last (worst) four ranks of the cycle, and if it is tertiary, it only uses the last two ranks.

For the first 20 ranks of any skill, it is treated as if it were in the primary skillset for the purposes of experience conversion, regardless of the character's guild. After that, for every 20 additional ranks, it loses use of the best rank from the cycle. For example, at 40 ranks, the skill would have a 7 rank rotation. This continues until the skill uses the proper cycle for its skillset placement.
For the first 50 ranks of any skill, it is treated as if it were in the primary skillset for the purposes of experience conversion, regardless of the character's guild. After that, from 50 to 100 ranks of every secondary and tertiary skill, it is treated as if it were in the secondary skillset. For example, a tertiary skill will learn as a primary skill up to 50 ranks, then as a secondary skill up to 100 ranks, and finally as a tertiary skill from 100 ranks on.

Note, this does not affect field experience pool sizes, only the drain rate.<ref>[[Post:Low level ranks, EXP, and you! - 7/11/2008 - 8:58:48]]</ref>

Field experience is converted to ranks every 200 seconds, with each skill having a separate 200 second timer. The amount drained is dependent upon a number of factors, including skillset, and the character's Wisdom. While not directly helpful, the character's Intelligence does play a part, as the amount converted to ranks is static, and Intelligence will increase the size of the experience pool, thus allowing for a longer time in which the skill can pulse.

Low Skill Bonus

For the first 50 ranks of any skill, it is treated as if it were in the primary skillset for the purposes of experience conversion, regardless of the character's guild. After that, from 50 to 100 ranks of every secondary and tertiary skill, it is treated as if it were in the secondary skillset. For example, a tertiary skill will learn as a primary skill up to 50 ranks, then as a secondary skill up to 100 ranks, and finally as a tertiary skill from 100 ranks on.

Experience Drain at Login

Experience drain at login is a separate process from normal experience drain. When a character is logged on, after about 10 seconds, a portion of their field experience is converted to ranks. The amount is depending upon how long it has been since the character was last in game, and approximate amounts were disclosed by GM Ssra:

< 30 Minutes - 0%
30 Minutes - 6.25%
2 Hours - 25%
4 Hours - 50%
8 Hours - 100%

Experience drain at login only occurs for players who have not receieved a warning within the last 6 months.

Also note, each character is independently tracked and logging on one character will not affect any others.
