I think the best way to categorize the GMPCs is by the events they've taken place in, or any in game organizations they belong to. Category:Regional Events

here we can follow the message boards seperation of events by region. I would seperate out the islands rather than all under Qi.

Category:Guild Events

guild openings, knowledge and such events. Perhaps some of the Necromancy events could be classified here? I'm not sure about that...

I do think that for a large number of characters dead or alive will work although there is a significant number for whom that will be confusing.
