The fluff of both enchantments ends with an incredible act of will that cannot be repeated readily. For example, the gwethsmasher enchantment involves the Moon Mage reconstituting a ball of energy into its original, physical form by staring at it really hard.

To be honest, this is kind of absurd. You hate the timers, which gates the enchantment by a quantified event, and you want to replace that with... gating the enchantment by an even longer, harder to track event?

That isn't the suggestion of someone who hates timers, that's a suggestion someone who loves the timer should make.
