Hematite is a common iron oxide compound widely found in rocks and soils. It naturally occurs in black to steel-grey or silver-grey, brown to reddish-brown, rust-red, and red colors. It is electrically conductive.

Some varieties of hematite are kidney ore, martite, iron rose, and specularite or specular hematite. The forms of these vary, all have a rust-red streak, meaning that they will leave a rust-red streak.
