Sunstone is a feldspar that has a spangled appearance when viewed from certain angles due to inclusions of red copper in the form of minute scales. This optical effect is called schiller.

Sunstone is usually the darkest at its center and becomes lighter toward the outer edges and can be colorless or found in colors ranging from orange, yellow, red, green, blue. Some variants have elemental copper, resulting in green and blue hues. The more copper within the stone, the darker the color.
