Right now mech lore = engineering skill. Its currently working at a 1 to 1 ratio. You get a slight skill bonus (much smaller than that of a technique) to crafting everything in that Discipline just from having the Career. Hobbies do not have this bonus. I'll check into the working on the rock in your backpack scenario. Due to the large size of stone, we do allow them to be worked on the ground.
