Extremely old, extremely capable [[Necromancers]] are capable of feats that dwarf most [[Philosophers of the Knife|Philosophers]] and their students. Sapient [[Risen]], armies of undead, etc.

The lore of the matter is that philosophic necromancy is trying to make a science out what was historically an intensely occult, intensely unique practice, and is not wholly up to the task in some areas.
