Any substance not interacted with should destroy itself after ~30 seconds... unless we missed something ;P

Just to clarify - metal comes in 6 rarities.

Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, Unique and Player-made.

As some may have noticed, niniam and lumium are now "rare" metals, and not very-rare. Kertig and Glaes, are Very Rare. Unique is restricted to auctions and festival stuff, and tyrium is a good example here. Player-made includes pewter, brass, bronze and steel.

No spawn/drop changes have been adjusted down since release.
