Description
You see Velusiyen, a Rakash.
She has a triangular face, wide-set blue eyes and a small nose. Her brown hair is long and straight, and is worn tangled. She has tanned skin and a thin figure.
She is slightly below average height for a Rakash.
She is wearing a Dwarven iron skirmisher's shield embellished with asini crows, a tattered linen cloak, a rough leather-clasped carpetbag, a front-laced leather tunic, a brown wool skirt, and a pair of waterlogged workboots with matted-fur lining.
Background
[OOC Note: Obviously the following is information that would not necessarily be known to any character ICly, but many of these details could be common knowledge to anyone living in the Middens.]
Velusiyen is born and bred to the Middens, having lived there her whole life and known nothing else. Her father Andraw was a common laborer, working as a stonemason around the Crossing. Though actually quite talented, he was unable to achieve great success in this field due to his pernicious habit of drink, for while he was never known to drink on the job, nevertheless he would often go on days-long benders that would cost him his work. As he was never anything worse than a maudlin drunk and was ordinarily quite merry under the influence, he was in general a popular man in the Middens. Sadly for family and friends alike, Andraw was killed in an accident while working on a new manor in the Crossing's Fayl'Shar Court, leaving the four-year-old Velusiyen and her eight-year-old sister Aizana solely in their care of their mother Sivela.
Sivela had always worked out of their home, taking in mending and washing and other small jobs, and generally being the family's more reliable if lesser source of income. Clever but reserved, she was the family's steadying presence, quiet except for when she and her husband would with equal abandon put on grand impromptu parties for the neighborhood, filled with music and dancing and forgetfulness from the dreary realties of slum life. When Velusiyen was six Sivela simply disappeared, until some days later Velusiyen and Aizana discovered their mother's body washed up in the muck of the Segoltha shoreline. Since that time Velusiyen has grown up as an orphan under the care of her elder sister.
Though attracting no particular amount of notice to herself, Velusiyen is well-known throughout the Middens by sight if not by name. When she's recognized it's generally as Lucy Mudlark, for she is a common sight down by the banks of the Segoltha, combing through the mud for things to sell for a bit of coin. If anything she is better known for her relation to Aizana, who runs the (obviously entirely reputable and above-board) business Aizana's Rare and Recovered Goods out of a dingy shack in the vicinity of the Aerin Slade neighborhood.
Despite her hardscrabble upbringing Velusiyen yearns perhaps more than anything to be a force for good in the world, and to break free of the life of crime and squalor endemic to the Middens without abandoning her friends and neighbors there. Due to the influence of a Prydaen bard named Urilor, whom she met in the Crossing Empath Guild after a serious injury, Velusiyen was recently persuaded (with some difficulty) to pursue her dreams of joining the Paladin Guild.
Personality
As a child of the Middens, Velusiyen tends to be mistrustful, brash, prickly, and in general to keep a bit of a hard shell around her innermost thoughts and feelings. She often talks tough and puts up a front of bravado as a form of self-defense. By nature, though, she is a dreamer and an idealist, however much these traits may clash with her actual existence living amidst the violence and deprivation of the slums. As a result of these opposing influences, she can fluctuate wildly between sunny positivity and the blackest gloom, and is given to being a bit grumpy. Her moods and her blunt manner sometimes put people off, but her outgoing and generally kind-hearted nature help to balance them out.
Fun Facts
Velusiyen's most prized possession is a small silver key that once belonged to her mother. She keeps it with her at all times, and oftens wears it on a ribbon around her neck.
