Attempted to prepare a spell (a Clear Vision at 10%, or 10 mana) that was more powerful than what the runestone could still tolerate (the equivalent of 6 min preps, or 6 mana).

"Complex runestones," which that demonstrated, deals with usage based on the raw power you're pumping through the rune. A full prep is more damaging to the runestone than a minimum prep. "Simple runestones," which don't allow you to meddle with the power, use the traditional, much more user-friendly concept of discrete uses.

An expended runestone doesn't disapper, though currently no planned use for them. Reclaiming it for spare parts isn't a bad idea.
