Not exactly. I tried to link it up that way for awhile but there were reasons that didn't pan out.

So there's basically three ways a sorcery can go wrong:

1) Fail entirely (Any spell can do this). That's what happens when you just try and cast VASTLY out of your league.
2) Backfire (Again, any spell can do this). This is what happens when you fail to cast but don't just fail utterly.
3) Sorcerous Backlash. This is the nasty stuff.

The first two are not linked to the last.

When you cast a sorcery it figures out a threshold of failure - this is mostly controlled by the spell and mana mix and is reduced by your sorcery skill. If you bounce under this no matter what else happens you will cause a sorcerous backlash. This chance can never be zero.

Once we've determined you have a failure we compare how bad you rolled to what the threshold was. The more you failed by the worst the backlash.

What this means is that easy feats of sorcery will rarely (if ever) go spectacularly wrong. Hard feats of sorcery, however, can run the entire gamut from mild annoyance to spectacular failure. Easy and Hard being relative to your skill of course.
