| On the lore side of things, familiars are not specimens of the species they look like. They're elemental spirits (Aether, to be specific) that are shaped in a particular way that's pleasing to the elemental and the summoner. The shape is arbitrary, bounded only by the knowledge of the carver and the willingness of the elemental to inhabit that shape.
When I was asked whether this would be an okay thing or not, I put forward some requirements on the design of the familiar which were all met. | |
