There is no mechanical way to categorize or identify "attack types" like you have described them.

I also want to describe how shield stats now work. The min defense is actually a % chance to block with twice your skill. This is always higher for large shields, and is not affected by the distance the attacks is coming from...

Then you have the skill modifier the shield stats provide. This is approximately what they current come out to:

Small Shield: 100% melee, 80% Missile
Med Shield : 98% melee, 90% Missile
Large Shield: 96% melee, 100% Missile


If you consider a large shield offers a good bit more than a 5% bonus over a small shield, I don't see what the issue really is... This was more of a change to PENALIZE small shields, than screw over large shield users :P
