Here's the thing. We need the weird time in DR because of certain guilds, spells, etc (looking at you Moon Mages). And I completely agree that when the game was created, yon when the world was young it wasn't a deep thought -- certainly I don't expect any of the founding GMs anticipated any of us (self included) nerding out about some of the things we as players tend to nerd out about. I personally know myself, Raesh and Persida are all guilty of this as players. :) Just don't sweat it too much, is what I'm saying. But by all means, nerd out about it, its interesting and sometimes can bring up awesome things/discussions. ~Evike PS. NERDS.
