Prydaen and Pets -- Lore Release · on 11/03/2015 09:24 AM CST 1630
Given some questions have come up concerning this due to the dietary habits of Prydaen, I decided a LORE post was needed.

Prydaen in the West

Among the Prydaen in the West, pets were few and far between and more than likely to earn you some odd stares from your fellow Prydaen. Animals were looked at as a food source, not necessarily ever a useful animal except in the case of crafters that were moving large quantities of goods from Hub to Hub or into Sungrove City for trading.

In the cases were pets were kept, the pets generally did not live long, usually being killed somehow within a year or two. Most often, the pet was somehow killed by another Prydaen that simply didn't understand that THIS particular animal was special and shouldn't be eaten. The longest living ones tended to stay with the Prydaen that kept to themselves and never brought their pet into Prydaen society.

In some very unique cases, there were Claw members that kept pets, usually pure white or pure black ones that were felt to be symbolic of Demrris and Tenemlor and so were protected fiercely.

Prydaen in the East

As the Prydaen have sought refuge in the East and adopted many traditions and experienced culture bleeding and blending, the concept of pet ownership has become more normalized, but still may be looked at with some confusion by Prydaen. Most commonly, a Prydaen may show favor towards other feline species if only for the similarities in temperament, but there remains a stark, stark contrast between the two species. An almost violent response from Hub leadership and Claws towards any Prydaen that treat a feline pet as a child. As Prydaen kits are protected and given higher status than most among the traditional Prydaen, giving such treatment to any animal is considered a severe offense to the race and to the Triquetra.

Treating pets as children may even incite some resentment or disgust among Prydaen that grew up during the time of the migration and were perhaps treated as little more than pets by non-Prydaen families that had adopted orphaned children. A practice that has largely contributed to Prydaen that now behave as little more than house cats.

Empathic Prydaen

While feline companionship may be most common among the Prydaen that now keep pets, it's also quite common for Empathic Prydaen to keep small pets that may normally be food for other Prydaen. The severe discomfort experienced by harming these creatures can often result in feeling a need to keep the creature alive and care for it, but not always. Many Empathic Prydaen remain just as viciously dangerous as any other.

TL;DR

In short, feel free to pick up kittens at HE or keep panthers and cat familiars on your Prydaen Warrior Mage and RP however you want, now you have some lore to back you up.
