All the variations shown in that post are bound together in a single conceptual location no wider or more varied than what we would call "a forest" or "the valley over there." The nature of the Astral Plane is a bit easier to understand when you realize that the Grey Expanse is the Moon Mage getting a lethally accurate experience of what the "pure" Astral Plane is like outside of Grazhir's safe bubble. -Armifer
