<<When the hell did it require a law and philosophy degree to PvP in DR?>>

That's ultimately the problem and that's one of the biggest sources of stress among the GMs. For every example someone gives where Cause X results in Effect Y where Consent would be granted, there's always Cause Sorta-X resulting in Effect Kinda-Y that wouldn't.

If we could monitor every single thing that someone says or does, the entire time they were in-game, we still couldn't always definitively say "Yes, you have Consent" or "No, you don't have Consent" because lots of folks like to start trouble in AIM or via some other medium and the target of said trouble isn't always mature/calm/rational enough to not let it bleed over into the game.

I'm not going to paint myself into a corner and start giving out black and white thumbs up or thumbs down responses to every example that can be conjured, however, I will say that in my opinion, if Vinjince (or anyone else) is involved a conflict and some non-involved person who is Open, Closed, or Guarded comes in and tries to drag another person who is involved in that conflict either toward or away from the conflict, then they're inserting themselves into the conflict and are 100% eligible to "play along".

While there are a number of things we COULD trap for in the system to automagically mark someone Open or Guarded, we cannot decipher intent or read minds, so for every rule we code, there are a dozen we can't cover. The problem is that in the players' eyes, the more we try to account for, the more we leave out, which just appears to make Consent more and more confusing, when it could ultimately be boiled down to something as simple as:

1) Don't be a jerk. Unless you are actually willing to accept the consequences. ALL of the consequences.

2) Don't write checks with your mouth that your butt can't cash. Unless you are actually willing to accept the consequences. ALL of the consequences.

3) If you choose to ignore 1 and 2, then be mature enough to accept responsibility for your actions, either from the player base or from the staff and are actually willing to accept the consequences. ALL of the consequences.

Our (your) main issue is that we have lots of people who say they're OK with those rules until they come out on the losing side of a conflict and then they decide it's not quite "fair" anymore.
