Rare metals, tongs and pliers aside, it is hard to argue for another metal being better than steel for basic equipment. It just didn't happen historically and would be confusing in its own right. I do have plans for enchanting to capitalize on odd combinations, putting the elemental and magical properties of the ingredients to good use. I'd also like to add some magic attacks that take into account the material of armor a person is wearing, and have some magical defenses take into account the material of the weapon being used.

Oh, and adding other metals to an already crafted steel ingot is the only way to adjust the item's weight and its stats. As was already mentioned, you must first make the steel from coal + iron, and then mix the finished steel ingot with the other metals.
