This comes from the notes I have on the Sorcerous Foci that never actually showed up, so there's still some conceptual wiggle room as we move toward integrating sorcery lore more deeply into the game (Raesh and I have been having that conversation off and on all day). Basically, you always have an element of your attunement at play when you cast spells, even when you're using sorcery to grasp at another mana type. A Moon Mage cannot help but exert "pressure" on the Lunar mana streams as he reaches out to foreign mana, just as a reflexive result of the psychic effort. We originally intended this to tie into attunement efficency loss: a spell that, say, uses Holy + Lunar would be 'okay' (insofar as that ever goes for sorcery) for a Moon Mage because he's not wasting any energy, but a Moon Mage casting a Holy + Elemental spell would still be exerting power along the Lunar axis and wasting his psychic strength. That got cut from the 3.0 release due to time. This also has the delightful consequence that all sorcery, even the socially accepted kind, results in sorcerous patterns. Boom. That's where things stand as of the 2010 decisions, though. -Armifer
