>>If I met an ancient Greek from Sicily that didn't know anything about fishing and thought that eels lived in the desert I would be very confused.

The vast, vast, vast majority of people in Elanthia will never cast a spell. Many will never see a spell cast, or certainly not often enough to know much about it. The adventure class is a small subset that largely interacts with other exceptional people (Royality, guildleaders and other members of the 1%).

>>Every species that forms provincial society has lived and breathed surrounded by harnessed mana streams for their entire existence- they should not be this ignorant and hateful.

Again, look at the world around you. How many people use computers and the internet every day and have absolutely no idea how it works. There are entire industries based around exploiting this and protecting people from being exploited.

And that's just one small sliver. You could come up with dozens of examples of things that effect us every day and there are TONS of information out there about it but so much of it is wrong or misleading or misunderstood or esoteric or just information overload. Take the anti-vaccine movement or anything, ever, to do with global warming or irradiated food.

Or this link, just to pick one at random from Google, for countless other things people think they know but actually don't:

Given all that I think it's safe to say it would be far less realistic to have most people understand the nuances of magic. Most of them likely don't even understand that sorcery = mixing mana. What they know is sorcery = THAT BIG MAGICAL EXPLOSION or necromancy = That force Lyras used that killed something like 1/3rd of the game world and caused them to rise back up attack us.
