What I was trying to get at is that custom work, like alterations and custom title scrolls, does not allow using words that we don't already have in DR (obviously this is less concrete for actual words in English, but you get my drift).

GMs do sometimes add new words that come from a different language background for other types of items (shops, auctions, quests, even just everyday things we add during development -- like titles that are broadly accessible), but we have a process that we must go through to have something like that approved, and it isn't done lightly. This isn't something that's really possible for us to do for custom work, since it could take several weeks, or months, or (lots) more for an addition (think again to your katana example here!) to be deemed acceptable and appropriate for the game, not to mention that the end result could still very likely be a no!

I can't speak that much to past design choices, but I can say that just like with other alteration rules, room description writing rules, and ways we do our coding, standards have changed over time, so some stuff that was put in years and years ago would never fly now if it weren't already in game.

Basically, like I said before, if you haven't already seen it in DR AND it is not an English word or a word from a DR-native language, the best rule of thumb is to expect that it will be rejected, and to have a back up in mind. This goes for any and all custom work, whether with a live merchant or via LTBs.

DR-native language addition suggestions are best posted in the racial forums in the language section, but I will say that we don't generally adopt RL words wholesale as part of a DR language for various reasons. If this line of conversation has interest enough to be continued, though, please do take it over to the relevant forum :D
