Confounds aren't really represented with as much nuance in the system as they could be.

For Moon Mage spells, it is theoretically possible for someone to cast Teleport or Moongate without being a moon mage. It would result in a messy death as they'd be unable to keep up with the indefinite number of immediate geometry calculations necessary to do it right, but nothing would stop the pattern itself from being completed.

But, again, the system in reality doesn't take that into consideration and just stops all Signatures cold.

>>And you mentioned that using spells causes the mana patterns to revert; is the idea that forcing them into spell patterns takes and expends energy? That the 'work' is coming from the mage, not the mana streams?

This is going deeper into physics than I typically intend, but yes. Mana can be thought of as an elastic medium that translates psychic effort into spell energy, then reverts back to normal for the next time. Work is required and there's no such thing as a perpetual magic machine.
