Pretty much. Thanatology rituals are handed down to the Philosophers from the (much older) Perverse cults. The Philosophers have no idea what the physics behind why certain ritual patterns cut into dead flesh evokes the Transference Link.

Likewise, the blade needs to be sacred (I use the term in its broadest sense) for no known reason, except that if it's used for mundane purposes it loses its effectiveness.
