Tier can be determined by focusing on an item. Here are tiers 1–6 (all else equal):

1. The enchantment ... has terrible potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is abstract. ... . The matrix appears to be appreciably thin ... .
2. The enchantment ... has poor potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is somewhat precise. ... . The matrix appears to be marginally thin ... .
3. The enchantment ... has moderate potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is very precise. ... . The matrix appears to be somewhat thick ... .
4. The enchantment ... has good potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is exceptionally precise. ... . The matrix appears to be rather thick ... .
5. The enchantment ... has great potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is incredibly precise. ... . The matrix appears to be quite thick ... .
6. The enchantment ... has excellent potency, demonstrates central complexity, and is amazingly precise. ... . The matrix appears to be very thick ... .

And grades 1–4 (all else equal) and the ranks needed to cap them:
1. This enchantment is of Minor grade (200 ranks)
2. This enchantment is of Lesser grade (500 ranks)
3. This enchantment is of Greater grade (1000 ranks)
4. This enchantment is of Major grade (1750 ranks)
