Hot Summer Nights
This was a multi-month game update release event which spanned the summer of 2003.
Official Description
DragonRealms: Hot Summer Nights lasts all through August! That's right...ALL SUMMER LONG! DragonRealms is definitely planning to get Hot this Summer. Can you handle it?
Releases
Week One
System Enhancement: Not Just Death, But Now Dying, Too! |
There are now times when you will slip into a "Dying" state instead of just being "Dead". During these times (such as in combat), you will be unable to move, but you'll have a chance at making it out of your situation alive, especially if you have someone around (like an Empath) to either heal you, drag you to safety, or distract whatever monster was beating up on you. This doesn't make it any easier to die, so those who prefer to hunt alone will still be able to do so. However, those folks in groups will have a better chance at survival...if their friends can get to them in time! Even more details here! |
Affecting all Traders |
This change affects how the system handles starving or abandoned caravans. If you leave a caravan in game and simply leave, a couple things can happen. Assuming it doesn't starve first, the guild will collect it for you! |
Affecting all Traders who use the stables |
The caravan stables are now more like horse stables to some degree, in that there is no longer the 24 hour limit to storing the caravan. You pay the initial fee for the first 24 hours, and will need to pay extra if you leave the caravan longer than that. |
Affecting all Traders 35th circle and above |
When you rent a caravan, if you are 35th circle or above, it will come equipped with some sort of storage device which you can put your items in! |
Nomads of the Arid Steppe Sect Shop |
The first HSN release for the Moon Mage Guild! They've waited for it long enough: The Nomad yurt has been expanded to include a shop! |
Magic Tweaks |
Creature magic: You may notice that those creatures that cast spells currently are starting to cast more intelligently by being more careful with their mana usage and choosing their targets more carefully.
PREPARE verb: Now, if you prepare a spell below the minimum mana required, you'll automatically move up to the minimum prep amount. You'll get a messaging indicating that you were attempting to prep below the min amount, but it will no longer stop you from actually preparing the spell as it would in the past. Static Discharge Spell (Warrior Mages): When cast on others, this spell previously acted as if the target was the one who'd cast it, meaning higher level Warrior Mages would have problems casting on lower level characters. This has been fixed. |
Barbarian Shop Opens |
The Barbarian-only shop located in the Crossing guildhall has finally opened its doors to established members of the Barbarian guild. |
AES Put to Rest |
The alternate experience system or AES is now dead and gone! (And there was much rejoicing!) |
Willowbee's Pelts and Spinners Opens |
Tanner Willowbee would like to announce the opening of Willowbee's Pelts and Spinners, ready to buy pelts from around Aesry Surlaenis. Conveniently located near the dock area, the Tanner wishes also to invite Surlaenis Trader Citizens to help finance his business and invest in the fur trade on the island. |
Leeches and Bloodsuckers Adjusted |
Bloodsuckers and leeches will now be easier to remove once they've attached themselves to your body, but they will also teach significantly less experience in all related skills (First Aid, Empathy, etc.). |
Armor Appraisal Updated |
You can now APPRAISE your armor and know exactly what skills it will teach. This will help those who need to learn skill in multiple armor types to train more easily. |
Paladin/Barbarian Parry Modification |
These guilds (and certain creatures, too!) will now have a chance to use their own weapon to push aside an attackers ranged weapon if the attacker attempts to fire the defending Paladin or Barbarian's weapon's range. |
Gwenalion Marina Open |
We are pleased to announce the opening of the Gwenalion Marina. The marina currently hosts six rather large sailing vessels that may be rented by the hour for a small fee. The pilots are well versed in sailing the ships back and forth from Riverhaven to Langenfirth. You can choose to let the pilots sail the ship or try your own hand! |
Rossman's Landing New Docks Open |
After suffering attacks by bands of marauding orcs for some time now, the village of Rossman's Landing, located on the northeastern shores of Lake Gwenalion, today opened its new dock. This dock allows travelers to rent a ship in Riverhaven or Langenfirth to reach this charming village, avoiding the arduous overland routes. |
Treasure Reevaluations for Aesry Surlaenis |
The amount of treasure that creatures on Aesry Surlaenis (and in Shard to a smaller degree) have been completed. These changes also affect the prices and weights of skins and pelts from some creatures, insuring for a better balance between risk and appropriate award. |
Week Two
Prophets of G'Nar Peth Shop |
Members of the G'Nar Pethian Moon Mage Sect now have their own shop in Langenfirth! |
Armor Hindrance Adjusted |
The armor hinderance penalty for wearing multiple types of armor has been increased. If you find that you are having more trouble with balance or fatigue while hunting than normal, try reducing the number of different types of armor you are wearing. You can use the APPRAISE (armor) command to see which type of armor each piece is. |
Changes to Juggling |
Some changes have been made to both the levels of success and the amount of experience award while juggling. The results should allow for better learning of the perception skill.
Some details about the changes:
With experimentation, you should find the right items to juggle for your particular experience level. |
Throne City Enhancements and Additions |
Chelwick's Glassworks: Though his shop has only a modest supply of curious glassware, Moon Mages should note that Chelwick's claim to fame is his work at repairing telescopes.
New Hunting Areas: Two new hunting areas are now open. One area has a brand new creature type (the spectacled river caiman) and the other area should help those who seek new places to learn climbing, swimming, and various combat skills. Celestial Compact Sect Area: A special Celestial Compact area is now open. You'll need to have a Celestial Compact member on hand, but this new forum hall provides an excellent area for player-run meetings. |
New Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries |
The first four new and/or enhanced Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries are available. During the preview period, you will not need to learn any of these roars from NPCs, but will simply have them available for use. Typing ROAR HELP in the game will give you a currently updated list of available Roars.

Joirin's Puzzle Shop Stock Updated |
Joirin is proud to announce the expansion of his stock of juggling supplies. Rank beginner to professional acrobat will find something to suit them at Joirin's on Aeliy Ushiaena'a in the City of Aesry Surlaenis'a! |
Empath Updates and Enhancements |
MANIPULATE: Manipulate allows an Empath of sufficient skill to persuade a creature that they (the Empath) are NOT the enemy. The creature may then ignore the Empath and proceed on its way, or may even turn on another creature that poses a threat.
PERCEIVE HEALTH: Additions to include the perception of the Dying, scanning of multiple rooms if one has the appropriate skills, and the teaching of Empathy. However, it's important to mention that those who have high enough skill and PERCEIVE HEALTH in a crowded area may be in for a surprise! |

The quest to attain 100th circle in the Moon Mage guild is now available to all 99th circle Moon Mages. In addition, a new hunting area is available on Taisgath. |
New Barbarian Guild Titles Available |
All of the new Barbarian titles are now available to members of the Barbarian Guild who meet the appropriate circle requirements. |
Week Three
New Book in Throne City |
The hardworking scribe of Throne City was seen carting a new book, entitled "The Book of the Sixteen", into the Imperial Palace Library, remarking that it was "not one for the faint of heart." Another copy of the book was also seen being delivered to the library in the Therengian citizens' private club, Telomin Hall. |
Ranger Animal Companions and TRACK |
Sufficiently skilled Rangers are now able to TRACK their own Wolf companions. Tracking your wolf will utilize the same mechanics used for Scouting anything else in the game. |
Ranger Guild Leaders Have Things to Talk About |
Ranger Guild Leaders now have new information about many things and are willing to share! Each Guild Leader have their own opinions about different topics. Experiment... ask around... see what they have to say. ASK <guild leader> ABOUT <topic> is your new friend. (They may even have something to say about your fellow established guild members!)
Additionally, they are now going to start giving an oral history lesson! The syntax for this is... ASK <guild leader> FOR HISTORY <topic> |
Purple Merchant Tent Spotted in Therenborough |
A ragged purple tent has been seen in one of Therenborough's alleys. When asked, the owner of the tent stated that his wares would be of particular interest to his fellow students of G'Nar Peth's teachings. "Anyone may purchase my wares," the elderly Prophet said. "But those who have not proven their dedication to G'Nar Peth may find that my goods do not enjoy their company very much." The aging merchant will be packing his tent up sometime in the not-too-far-future, so those interested in perusing his unusual inventory shouldn't delay for too long. |
New Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries |
The next batch of Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries are available. As with all Roars and Battle Cries during the Hot Summer Nights Preview, you will not need to learn any of these roars from NPCs, but will simply have them available for use. Power Perception Skill Updates and Changes |
Several updates have been made to the Power Perception skill. The changes address a number of bugs and problems in the Power Perception system. Please think of this as Release v2.2 as we still have some issues to work out (that will be Release v2.3). As a magic user, here's what you can expect:
For Everyone
For Non-Moon Mages
For Moon Mages
For Creatures
|
Weapon Roundtime Changes |
Previously, weapon Round Times were only a function of a weapon's weight and strength. This formula now has been modified to incorporate the user's agility and strength, and the weapon's weight and balance, as well as it's suitability for power. Weapons that are poorly balanced will still rely mostly on the user's strength. Conversely, weapons that have very little suitability for power will focus almost entirely on the user's agility. Weapons that have approximately the same balance and suitability for strength will benefit similarly from increased agility or strength.
A few of the player-only modifiers to RTs have been expanded to incorporate creatures, as well. In particular, this relates to the minimum RT adjustments based on weapon type and attack type. Also, THRUST now has a minimum RT of 2 seconds. |
Stealth System Updates |
Quite a few modifications have been released for the core Stealth Mechanics. Currently, these mechanics govern the SEARCH and SNEAK verbs. Throughout Hot Summer Nights, additional verbs will be updated to incorporate the core Stealth Mechanics in terms of both success calculations and experience award formulae.
These changes include:
|
Rissan Warrior Mage Guild Opens |
The Warrior Mage Guild on the island of M'Riss is now open! |
Changes to HIDE |
The HIDE verb has been rewriten to introduce a number of changes, the most significant involving migration to the core Stealth Mechanics, and making hiding from opponents facing you at melee range a guild-restricted ability.
More specifically, the HIDE verb now behaves more like SNEAK and SEARCH by using the same core formulae to determine success/failure, and it also now uses the new timer mechanics.
More technical information and additional details about the new Hiding mechanics can be found here! |
The "Inn of the Crystal Wave " Opens for Business |
Derrien Margate is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the finest of establishments on Aesry Surlaenis'a -- the "Inn of the Crystal Wave".
"Serving only the most tantalizing of foods and beverages, and offering the most luxurious of accomodations, with the very creme de la creme reserved for the citizens of the area, the Inn is sure to meet all your needs for lodging and refreshment. Your mount can be pampered in our stables by our eager staff at the same time as you relax in our sumptuous private rooms, or order a fine liquors and cordials in our garden." |
Week Four
Bantheld's Ironworks Expands its Inventory |
The Mayor and Chamber of Commerce of the town of Riverhaven, not content with last year's sweeping changes, are proud to announce still more additions to the town!
Master Smith Bantheld has hired a new journeyman ("This one can actually read!" says an awed apprentice), and is proud to announce a new line of true light and heavy platemail and chainmail armor and accessories, as well as an expanded selection of shields for the residents of our fair city. |
Crin's Herbal and Alchemical Supplies Grand Opening |
Crin's shop, located along Riverhaven's eastern wall, has long been known for reliable supplies of healing herbs to aid the injured adventurer. Now, he is proud to announce that he will be stocking a wider range of herbal remedies, as well as a limited supply of alchemical equipment for local residents. |
Thringol's Weapons Opens in Riverhaven |
The mayor and Riverhaven's Chamber of Commerce are pleased to welcome a new face to the city, as the Gor'Tog weaponsmith Thringol today opened his new shop on Silvermoon Road in the southwest sector of town.
When asked for comment on his wares, Thringol told our reporter, "You take li'l knives, stick em in someone, they keep coming. You take big knives, chop someone, they still keep coming. You take blunt weapon, smash em in head, they stop. Blunt is good. Thingol knows, Thingol pretty blunt himself!" This shop will be opened for Premium Subscriber preview for one week, and will be open to everyone after that. |
Warrior Mage Spell Updates |
The long awaited Chain Lightning spell is now available for Preview. Please be advised that there is a requirement of 40th circle to try out the Chain Lightning spell. "The Chain Lightning spell unleashes blasts of lightning randomly on targets in the area. Those protected by a discharged Ethereal Shield will not be struck."
"The Warrior Mage Guild has a number of oddities in its magical arsenal and the Ball Lightning spell is a prime example. This spell will create a crackling ball of lightning that strikes soon after forming. Though it relies on targeted magic skill, it can not be targeted nor forced in any way to pick a specific target. All shots it takes tend to be... random. Some mages claim that the ball lightning is semi-sentient, choosing its own targets based on whims that we can never comprehend. It is certainly curious that it will never attempt to strike other adventurers." "In any case, an existing Ball Lightning can be reinforced with additional casts, and, if the caster has enough magic devices skill, it can be pointed towards an adjoining area and then pushed there to do as it will. Alternately, one can command the lightning to a direction." The specific commands to "control" your Ball Lightning are POINT (to toggle through available room exits), and PUSH to send it that way. Alternately, you can COMMAND <lightning> TO <direction>. The "TO" is important. Remember this requires Magic Device skill.
Note that you will NOT be able to permanently choose the spells while they are on Preview. To cast these spells while they are on Preview, simply PREP <spellname> <mana amount> at will -- you will not need to learn them first but you'll need to be a Warrior Mage. |
New Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries |
The next batch of Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries are available. As with all Roars and Battle Cries during the Hot Summer Nights Preview, you will not need to learn any of these roars from NPCs, but will simply have them available for use. Typing ROAR HELP in the game will give you a currently updated list of available Roars.

Note: The Barbarian Development Team hopes that during this preview period, Barbarians will be able to experiment with the new Roars and Battle Cries to determine their actual effects. It's possible that more exact details regarding each Roar or Battle Cry's specific powers will be revealed in the future, but for now the plan is to allow the Barbarian hordes to have fun figuring things out on their own. |
New Book Available; Merchants Set-up Shops |
The sound of feet pounding their way up and down the stairways has been emanating from Meraud's Tower, past the brook out the West gate of The Crossing, as Rakash from all over converge to read the newest book in the rosewood case, "Rakash Traditions and Dawvs". A few of the known merchants who sell items specific to Rakash have set up shop outside and a new one has joined them. |
Paladin Spells: One Old, One New |
Note that you will NOT be able to permanently choose the spells while they are on Preview. To cast these spells while they are on Preview, simply PREP <spellname> <mana amount> at will -- you will not need to learn them first, but you will need to be a Paladin. |

ALIGN Available for Moon Mages |
Since the Children tampered with the Moon Mage Guild's connection to the Plane of Probability, new light has been cast on the work of a scholar long thought to be discredited. A book detailing a method to ALIGN oneself more fully with the Plane of Probability has been delivered to Tiv, and it is now on display for all Mages with the skill to understand the tome.
"I've read this book many times, but until the new insights gained since the mysterious device was removed from the obelisk, it never made much sense to me. Now, Mages with very little skill are finding the technique useful," said Yuev, who handed the book over to Tiv. In other words, the ALIGN ability is now learnable by any Mage of 4th circle or greater. Those interested in obtaining the new skill should seek out the librarian in Tiv's fortress near the Greater Fist mountain located by Sicle Grove. ALIGN allows Moon Mages to attempt to predict on a specific skill. It also lets Mages try to purposely turn a prediction to a curse. ALIGN only works with divination tools, PREDICT is unaffected by aligning. |
New Trees for Climbing in Langenfirth |
After much debate, the Langenfirth Arbor Society has concluded that the use of trees for climbing is approved. Multiple trees are now available for use that will teach the Climbing Skill to players of varying skill levels. |
New Prediction System Available for Moon Mages |
The newest version of the Prediction System are now available for use by members of the Moon Mage guild.
Many of the changes that have been made may not be immediately obvious, so things may "look" the same, but they definitely are not! Do not to fall into the trap of assuming something is the way it is because "that's how it was under the old system." It may be the same, or it may not be, so the Moon Mage Development Team urges their guild members to experiement! |
Week Five
Justice on the Trade Routes |
Recently the various clerks and commerce ministers, or their representatives, from the various Trader Guild outposts met to discuss the problem of theft from Traders working on the established trade routes.
A spokesman for the meeting has been quoted as saying, "Theft on the trade routes poses a great risk to the commerce of the various provinces. Left unchecked, this sort of activity is bound to reduce the quantity off goods being transported between the different cities and towns and could eventually lead to hardship and starvation to those who live in areas that do not grow enough food to sustain them. If the government won't take steps to curb this problem, we certainly will." When asked to elaborate on the 'steps' that would be taken the spokesman simply smiled and said, "We'll teach them respect the members of our guild going about their lawful work." If you are a Trader and you are travelling along the Trade Routes and you catch someone stealing from you, you will now be able to go to a nearby Trader Outpost, visit the shipping clerk, and ACCUSE <name of person you caught stealing>. If you were on the direct Trade Route between two outposts, you successfully saw the person stealing from you, and you get to the outpost in time, the Trader Guild will send out a posse to deal with the culprit! |
SNIPE and POACH Commands Updated |
SNIPE and POACH both have been updated to use the new Core Stealth Mechanics, much like HIDE, SNEAK and SEARCH. Successfully using the SNIPE and POACH commands will teach the Hiding skill. |
New Bardic Enchante System, Verbs, and Commands! |
The new Bardic Enchante System is now fully operational!
There's so MUCH to tell you about this new system and all it's bells and whistles (haha!) that we had to make a special Enchante System page! Check it out here! |
Road to the Bay Opens in Arthe Dale |
The Thane of Arthe Dale was happy to announce today that a road to Arthe Dale Bay has been opened to the public. Bungles Bunglefoot, a noted citizen and Merchant of the Dale, is currently docking his newly purchased boat, "The Tipsy Seahorse" in the bay there and welcomes all visitors. |
New Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries |

As with all Roars and Battle Cries during the Hot Summer Nights Preview, you will not need to learn any of these roars from NPCs, but will simply have them available for use. Zhendil's Emporium and Fever Point Neighborhood |
It's a pleasure to let you know that Zhendil's Emporium, a gem outpost, has opened on M'Riss! There are also a number of new homes available for purchase by Premium Members in Fever Point. Enjoy!
PS: Be careful on the pier! That piling's slippery! |
Bones and Bowls! New and Updated Divination Tools Available! |
After being presented with an enruned sandstone bowl, Krrish demanded to return to his home in Theren. "I cannot guarantee his safety," Taramaine said sadly. "But I have arranged for an Y'Shai Guardian to protect him from further attacks. Since the Children's failure at the obelisk, it is more important than ever to provide the Guild with the tools they need to fight the threat." In addition to bones, it seems Krrish has mastered the art of bowl making, and has added the mysterious new dish to his menu.
What does this mean? The merchant Krrish is now back in his shop! In addition to bones, he now sells bowls! The enruned sandstone bowls are the first of the new divination tools to be released but certainly not the last... In additional news, fearing that Krrish would corner the bone market, the owner of the Muspar'i bone shop has re-opened his doors for business! |
Bardic Books Hit the Shelves |
Several new books about the Bardic Enchantes are now available in the Crossing Bard Guild Library! Check one out today! |
The Degan Sails, and Leth Road |
In late breaking news, Parcolo, Captain of the Degan, has been valiantly rescued by a band of brave Rissians! As a reward, any citizen of M'Riss, plus anyone in his/her group, will be able sail between M'Riss and the mainland from Acenamacra. And where is Acenamacra, you may ask? This picturesque ocean village is just down the road, east of Leth. The road picks up near the E'erdream Bower Gate. |
New Message Board Avatars! |
There are some new Forum Avatars available for you to choose from.
Head over to the Forums and click on PROFILE option at the top of the page. You'll see the new Avatars listed under "Zombie" in the creature section! |
Week Six
Major Enhancements to SMELL |
The SMELL verb has been updated to allow players to choose their own personal scent from a wide range of possibilities. This does not override perfume, which will continue to be a much richer smell, however it does give a default when someone smells you (eww!). SMELL HELP will give you the syntax on how to set your signature scent.
In related news, the list of scents for player homes is also greatly expanded, and (oddly enough) may look somewhat similar to the list of available signature scents for players. Amazing how these things happen, isn't it? Also in a fit of unprecedented responsiveness to player requests, the HUG verb has been updated to allow you to automatically SMELL the person you're hugging, if they have a personal scent defined. (Well, that, and the fact that everyone running around smelling each other just looked really odd!) Please note you'll only see it if you HUG <person>, but not if you HUG <person> <emote>. Right now, this doesn't take perfume into account (perfume is a seperate system), just the scents you set with the SMELL verb. |
Moon Mage Guild Leaders More Responsive |
All Moon Mage Guild Leaders have finally realized that they are not alone in this world. They now have a few things to say about each other, as well as the leaders of other nearby Guilds.
This is the first update to the Moon Mage Guild Leaders to make them a bit more interactive and "aware" of the world. Currently, you can ASK <leader> about any of the other Moon Mage Guild Leaders, as well as any other Guild Leader in their city. |
100th Circle Barbarian WAR STOMP Ability |
The 100th circle Barbarian ability, War Stomp, is now available for all qualifying Barbarians. If you have reached 100th circle, travel to Bear's cave to receive instruction in the ability and then just type STOMP for proper syntax. |

BACKSTAB Update |
The BACKSTAB verb has been updated to to utilize the new Core Stealth Mechanics. Like the new versions of HIDE, SNEAK, SEARCH, SNIPE and POACH, BACKSTAB will now use the same experience award calculations, timers, and success tests.
There are a few unique aspects that apply only to BACKSTAB within the Core Mechanics:
|

Week Eight
The Name Game |
All NEW characters that are created in DragonRealms will now have NO last name. When a new character is created, they'll only be asked for a first name and will then proceed into the Character Manager as usual.
Any existing LAST NAME will be able to be chosen as a new character's FIRST NAME. This will free up HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of names that have been unavailable and make life a lot easier for new folks coming into the game. For all of the details, please read this post carefully. |
Bundled Skin Changes |
Many players may have noticed that they simply run out of places to put things, in particular, when they are already wearing a bow, shield, and some sort of container. The problem becomes quite annoying when one wishes to bundle skins, wear the bundle and then discovers that he or she "cannot wear any more items like that".
To resolve this issue, you can now PULL a bundle and change the location where it is worn from: draped around your shoulders, around your waist like a belt, on your back like a backpack, attached to your belt, or slung over your shoulder. |
Musical Theory Splits |
The Musical Theory skill is has split into individual instrument skills.
Those people who currently have ranks in Musical Theory will be given this one opportunity to convert ranks from that skill into the Instrument Skill of their choice. To convert your current Musical Theory ranks into individual Instrument Skills, please type CHOOSE MUSIC and read the instructions. Bards will not need to convert any of their ranks over, since they already possess all of the Instrument Skills. |
Roars currently available are:
Battle Cries currently available are:
Note: The Barbarian Development Team hopes that during this preview period, Barbarians will be able to experiment with the new Roars and Battle Cries to determine their actual effects. It's possible that more exact details regarding each Roar or Battle Cry's specific powers will be revealed in the future, but for now the plan is to allow the Barbarian hordes to have fun figuring things out on their own. |
Moon Mage Mirrors |
Moon Mages will find a new way to touch the plane of probability. Mirrors are now being sold by a rather upset member of the Progeny. The seller, a despondant Elothean, can be found wandering aimlessly between the Observatory and the east gate of The Crossing. Any problems, issues or questions about the new tool can be posted on the message boards. |
Perobler's of Mer'Kresh Opens |
Perobler's of Mer'Kresh is now open for business on Ship Circle. This fine establishment offers for sale high-quality timepieces. Our popular orlogs can be purchased in brass, silver, or gold cases, and we now offer pendant-orlogs with the same reliable mechanism but worn around the neck on a matching metal chain. For all your timepiece repairs, don't trust to luck: Perobler's of Mer'Kresh now offers courteous, fast and trustworthy repair service. |
Aesry Surlaenis'a Housing Area Opens |
A new housing area on Aesry Surlaenis'a has opened with more freestanding cottages and a few caves for those who don't like the sun. It's located off of the existing cottage area on the south side of town, and also has a lovely stream for those who wish to practice Swimming. |
Load/Unload Updated for Core Stealth Mechanics |
The mechanics for loading and unloading ranged weapons have been moved to the Core Stealth Mechanics System, and will now have their success and experience award calculations function in the same manner as the HIDE verb.
As a result of this change, the act of loading or unloading a ranged weapon while you are hidden will teach a bit of Hiding, providing an additional method for training the skill. |
Week Nine
Crossing Market Expansion |
As you wander about the bazaar area you will notice four new market stalls! These stalls can be rented by qualifying Traders from the monger similar to how you rent market tables. You can ASK MONGER ABOUT STALLS to get general information about them and ASK MONGER FOR STALL to rent one.
You must be a Trader of 40th circle or higher and you cannot already have a table rented in the Crossing market. Similarly, if you are renting a stall, you won't be able to rent a table in the main market tent. |
New Bardic Enchantes! |
We are very happy to announce the addition of two new Enchantes to those currently being previewed by members of the Bards Guild: Drums of the Snake and Naga's Blessing. If you find that you have any questions or problems using either of these enchantes, please refer to NEWS 3 3 while in-game for ways in which you can best find the information you need.
Drums of the Snake Requirements: Misdirection, Merelew's Legacy Renowned for its usefulness, Drums of the Snake will attune all listeners to the tribal rhythms of nature, greatly increasing their own ability in the survival skills which you bear the most knowledge. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have much impact on those skills that pertain to stealth or evasion due to the fact that the bard's own music will often draw attention rather than direct it away. This enchante is not to be underestimated, however, due to its potency. Naga's Blessing Requirements: Nexus Nagas are unusual creatures, ones that bear natural attunements to the mana around them and the ability to coax it to their will. It is through the use of this enchante that you tap into the peripheral auras of the Lesser Nagas, increasing the capacity and restorative qualities of your own ability to harness mana, and allowing you to share these benefits with those others who are in range of your song. Through careful application of this enchante, you may find that you catch an occasional glimpse of a Lesser Naga as you perform, but those wily creatures will duck out of sight almost as soon as they are seen. |
SCOUT Upgrades |
The SCOUT AREA command has now been upgraded.
Rangers with sufficient skill can now see hidden doorways and paths! Also, if things are a bit misty (due to fog or other reasons), this upgrade just might help you find your way around! |
Final Update: Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries |
The full list of Barbarian Roars and Battle Cries are now available! As with all Roars and Battle Cries during the Hot Summer Nights Preview, you will not need to learn any of these roars from NPCs, but will simply have them available for use. Typing ROAR HELP in the game will give you a currently updated list of available Roars.
The full list of Roars and Battle Cries:
Note: The Barbarian Development Team hopes that during this preview period, Barbarians will be able to experiment with the new Roars and Battle Cries to determine their actual effects. It's possible that more exact details regarding each Roar or Battle Cry's specific powers will be revealed in the future, but for now the plan is to allow the Barbarian hordes to have fun figuring things out on their own. |
Special News about Undershard |
Thieves will be glad to note that in the Spire, they'll now be able to find the assistance in contacting folks that was formerly denied them. |
Stealth System Changes: Closing to Pole and Melee Range |
We've made some changes to the engagement system and how it interacts with stealth.
Specifically, this involves closing from missile to pole, or pole to melee ranges while hidden. These changes now require a stalking-based test at each range, and will use the Core Stealth Mechanics for calculations and experience awards. Naturally, this will teach the Stalking skill. Like most of the stealth tests (BACKSTAB and POACH being exceptions), this test is against all creatures the entire room. The base difficulty is slightly more difficult than SNEAK itself, and noticably easier than HIDE. Additionally, it has improved handling for closing to various ranges on hidden targets. |
Stealth System Changes: ADVANCE |
In addition to the changes mentioned above, players [creatures will get access to this change very soon] will be able to advance on already hidden targets, providing they have the POINT effect. That is, if you have spotted the creature by SEARCHing or some other stealth contest, you will be able to start advancing, as well as close various engagement ranges, without having to point first. This applies whether the advancer is hidden or not. |
New Prediction Tools |
The last of the current batch of Predition Tools for Moon Mages are available: Charts and Prisms!
Speak to the Dwarf in Leth Deriel for more information! He can be found wandering around the southeast corner of the city, near the old Observatory. |
Week Ten
Ratha Origami Shop |
Ssivo's "Migi Shagamat" is now open for business on the Third Tier of Ratha, Eastern Promenade. "The Paper Castle" offers origami patterns, papers, and cases for both the trying novice and skilled master. |
Gor'Tog Stat Rebalancing and Racial Encumbrance Changes |
For quite some time the Gor'Tog race has operated under a total +2 penalty to their stats, meaning that they had to spend more TDPs to earn stat increases than the average race. Originally, this was in compensation for a bonus to encumbrance. However, the game in its current maturity has made this encumbrance bonus obsolete, creating a need for Gor'Tog stats to be rebalanced. A committee began in November of last year to discuss what could be done.
...bringing them back to a bottom line of +0/-0 just like all the other races. When this change was researched, certain problems with the encumbrance system came to light. Clearly if Togs were going to be rebalanced, some of the encumbrance bonus would have to be removed. Since this bonus did not adequately compensate for an overall stat penalty, this is a minor exchange. In a simlilar vein, Gnomes are grossly penalized in encumbrance, and this race doesn't even have a stat bonus! So changes needed to be made on both ends. The result of this is that all races will see a (hopefully small) change in their encumbrance. Those with encumbrance bonuses will see a decrease to that bonus, and those with penalties will see a bit of reprieve. This is applied on a scale, so the bigger your penalty or bonus, the bigger your change. |
COUNT Upgrades |
The COUNT verb has been updated to be somewhat more useful! Here are some of the new commands....
COUNT ROOM
COUNT CRITTER
COUNT <object>
There are some "Easter Eggs" (another term for "secret features") for two guilds. We'll let you figure out which guilds and what the secrets are on your own! |
New Stat (STRENGTH, INTELL, etc) Verbs |
You will now notice eight new verbs related to stats -- AGILITY, STRENGTH, STAMINA, REFLEX, INTELLI, WISDOM, DISCIPL, and CHARISMA. All of these will provide a more detailed reading of your particular stat, including common uses.
This is predominately oriented towards our newer players, but more experienced players will likely appreciate the fact that each stat verb also displays how many TDPs it will take to train to the next point. (Please note, that due to conflicts with other verbs, you'll have to type at least CHARI, not CHAR(ge); STRE, not STR(etch); STAM, not STA(nd); REFL, not REF(use); and DISC, not DIS(band).) |
New Bardic Recalls |
A series of Bardic Recalls pertaining to events both near and far on the timeline of guild history are now available.
Bards may have to undertake exploratory forays to discover some of these, but they should prove to be accessible and of use to Bards of all skill levels. |
Bardic Signal Whistling |
Bards will find, when they speak to their Guildleaders, that a new Signal Whistling ability is now available to them. This ability will allow them to whistle certain keywords or symbols to other people, though only Bards who have been trained to understand that specific signal will be able to translate it right off the bat. This ability is available to all Bards who have attained their 12th circle, and each of them will learn a new batch of signals every five circles thereafter, up until 32nd circle.
You may also notice that there aren't that many keywords in the final batch of signals you can learn. This is because we want you to play with the signal whistling ability and decide what additional signals you want. Ideas for additional keywords/signals (and not just for that last batch) can be posted in the Bard Abilities folder. Anyone, Bardic or not, can suggest additional keywords or signals for them to gain. |
Aesry Origami Shop |
Aesry Surlaenis'a is proud to announce the opening of a quaint little shop found on Ayor Eloir'i'a. Shopkeeper Tilaya welcomes and encourages you to browse her selection of fine paper, instructions, and cases. |
Additions to the Royal Library of Muspar'i |
The shelves in the Royal Library of Muspar'i creaked once again with the addition of three new books. Two cover a subject that might be new and of interest to the religious type; the third has more of an impact on the whole body of S'Kra.
Despite being a bit tardy, Malkhhan, of Naarti'hhs'naartin fame, was paid handsomely for his work on the custom covers of these new tomes. A special bonus in imported fabrics (straight from the hand of the King no less, and if you think any merchant is going to stop hearing about that for the next ten years, you're sadly mistaken) has put him in high spirits, and any who hang around his shop (say, 9pm EST on Saturday night) might find his usual grouchiness and reclusiveness to part a little -- enough, some say, for a sneak peek at his new line of gamantangs for this season, granted to those wise enough to fawn over his obvious genius. |
Week Eleven
The Rumor System! |
We're very happy to announce the release of a new system in all instances of DragonRealms, the Rumors System for Traders and Bards.
The Rumors System is in fact a network of bartenders, clerks, waitresses, and market mongers scattered throughout Elanthia that both collect and share rumors that they have heard while going about their everyday lives. These rumors will vary from the silly (such as you might see in a supermarket tabloid) or to the serious (such as fortelling future events). It will be up to you, the Traders and Bards who gather these rumors, to discern which of them are true concerns or mere fabrications, and pass them on to your fellow adventurers in Elanthia. To recap briefly, in a more Out Of Character Format: You will find throughout Elanthia a great deal of Non-Player Characters (NPCs), most notably in inns, taverns, or markets, who are willing to collect and dispense rumors.
NOTE: Not every NPC will want to interact with every person. Some will only speak with Gor'Togs, while others only like Halfling Men, and so forth. Others will either only collect rumors, or give them. Rumors submitted to NPCs will not appear to the general public right away, if they do at all. |
Defiant Scream Ability for Bards |
Bards will now be able to use SCREAM DEFIANCE in order to release a heart-wrending, howling scream that will affect all people and creatures in the area. Possible effects include inducing roundtimes, stuns, and possible even internal damage, all dependant upon the force of your scream and the powers of those around you to resist the deafening deluge of sound. Be warned, for if you cause actual damage upon others in the room, this IS consent. Use of this ability upon others while you are in populated areas may also result in being charged by the local authorities. |
Holy Weapon Renewal Site |
Guild Leader Darius is pleased to report that a Holy Weapon renewal site has been located at the Eye of Chadatru, inside the Crossing Temple. |
Five New Moon Mage Enchantments |
Fantast Terbalen, acting head of the Moon Mage Guild Research Department has announced the development of five new enchantments. The creation of the new discoveries, named Eluned's Scry, Garden's Vision, Astoshe's Eclipse, Skaefarees Oil, and Sokis Stone, were taught by the Pethian explorer to several guild members.
Details are available on the forums, in the Enchantments category of the Moon Mage folder. Any questions or concerns should be posted there as well. |
Tembat Nai Itan Opened |
"In the Age of Myth, Peri'el put the selkie upon Reshalia,
where they would gather on the bluffs to sing to the sun, calling it up at each dawn and setting it to rest at dusk. When the S'Kra arrived, they tried to enslave the selkie and use their songs to dry the oceans into deserts. The selkie fled to the caves and used their song to sing up the children of Ushnish, to defend them. The selkie remain in their place without sun waiting for the island to become still and empty again." There's a new addition to the island of Ratha and to old Elepaio's shop. Explore & enjoy! |
Blackthorn Canyon Revealed |
Excerpt from Emerald Chronicles IV: Commander Graev:
"12th day of Moliko, 196 Hren, We lost many this evening and that's never an easy thing for a Commander. The strength building in the Hand that her messenger spoke of was thrust upon us in the very early hours of the morning, before Berengaria's Touch alighted on the field of battle. The Wall stands yet, and so we have victory... "
What you will find:
|
New Trader Outpost in Ilithi |
With the opening of the route to Blackthorn Canyon, the Traders Guild is pleased to anounce that it has opened a new trading outpost in this area. Located south of the city of Shard, the Darkling Wood outpost is now accepting and issuing trading contracts to spur the movement of goods to and from the area.
A word of caution is in order however. The area is quite untamed and there are dangerous creatures who inhabit the route. This is quite unusual for the trading area in Ilithi, so you will find that values are significantly higher for contracts destined for or originating from this new outpost. |
Substance System v2.0 |
The core system that handles substances has been totally revamped, providing developers with a wider range of customizable features and allowing easier ways for us to create new alchemical mixes.
Most of the processes (MIX, SHAKE, CRUSH, COMBINE, & BREAK) all still work the same, but there is one big change and that is that you won't be able to pick up liquids anymore unless they are in an assumed container. You'll need to use the FILL and POUR verbs to manipulate liquids. FILL {container} WITH {liquid} POUR [part|half|most|all] {container} POUR [part|half|most|all] {container} IN {container} [part|half|most|all] is optional and defaults to all PART equals one part HALF is half the contents MOST is three quarters the contents ALL if all of the contents POUR HELP will display the above info on the POUR verb. In addition, healing herb and mix potencies are still (pretty much) the same, but you may notice some changes with herbal potencies depending on how they are applied. For example, a salve may not work at full potency if eaten instead of rubbed/applied on. You'll need to experiment a bit to see which herbs and means of application work best. |
Week Twelve
Advanced PLAYACT Ability |
Today you will find that those Bards who have achieved their fortieth circle in the Guild now have the chance to learn the Advanced PLAYACT ability. This allows the Bard to PLAYACT even in places that are not specifically designed for it, although at a higher cost both in regards to strength of body and strength of will. (What this means is that the cost to your fatigue and Bardic Polish will be higher than you normally would incurr while playacting in a place designed for it, though it IS possible to train this down. You will have to discover yourself what you'll need to train.)
Bards using PLAYACT in any type of area, while designed for it or not, will find that they still produce messages that they are giving a performance. In addition, rooms containing dance floors have been added to the list of rooms that are specifically designed to cater to PLAYACTing. |
MOCK Verb |
You say to Rigby, "You, sir, are a mewling, rough-hewn hedge-pig!"
The MOCK verb is now available for use! |
Bard Guildleaders Updated |
A long time ago in the mystical land of Elanthia there was a guild of Bards. Now these Bards were kept in line, run ragged, and occasionally entertained by a quartet of guild leaders spread throughout the cities of the land. On the whole, these illustrious paragons of Barddom on Elanthia had little to say about matters that did not involve requests to circle, joining the guild, or answering questions about magical enchantes.
Finally, the Bard GMs cried out, "Enough!" and taught the Bard Guildleaders how to respond to questions about many more subjects. |
Surprise Library Book Release |
"The Barbarian Spell Book" By Grooba Gligtoggle can be found in the Asemath Academy, Freshman Library.

Song Scroll Contest Winners Announced; Scroll Shop Opens |
We're very pleased to announce the winners of the Muspar'i Song Scroll Contest.
In first place, the song "In Muspar'i" by Gulliver VonDeverone. In second place, the song "The Eternal Sacrifice" by Lethargy Silkyfingers. In third place, the song "Sand Singer" by Serienna Alypsen. Each of the winners was contacted about their prizes, but part of the winners' prizes was to be honored within the city of Muspar'i itself. This brings us to part two of this release, which is the announcement of the opening of the Street of Scribes in Muspar'i, which commemorates the contest and its winners. On this street, you'll find a new shop selling these song scrolls! |
New Paladin Guild Shop |
Guild members report that Guildleader Eamonn has graciously allowed a small extension to the Ratha Paladin guild in the form of a shop. |
Ritual Alters in Shard |
The Temples of Light and Darkness now have rooms with ritual altars in them. No more having to go to Steelclaw Clan carrying your mop and bucket! |
New Ranger Trails |
For those Rangers who just love to find new things, here is a little something for you! New Ranger Trails have been released for you to find! We're not going to say how many new ones are out there or where they are. That is all up to you guys to figure out!
We WILL let you know that there are a couple that are easier then any existing trail and require less skill to find. This should help out those struggling young Rangers attempting to learn the Scouting skill. Happy hunting! |
Gorbesh Fortress Overrun! |
"Some speculate that the creatures were drawn by debris left behind by the Gorbesh. Others claim that it is an inevitable law that a hole will soon be filled. Whatever the reason, this reporter has heard repeated rumors of hulking beasts overrunning the abandoned Gorbesh fortress near the town of Dirge.
In former times, these creatures were a menace to the young. Locals warn of the shaggy brutes stumbling in to bash a poor woman on her way to market, stealing her hat or wrenching her basket from her hands. The time has come to say "Enough!" No longer can we tolerate such brutish behavior. We call upon all citizens to band together to drive these so-called scavenger trolls from the fair city of Dirge, that it may once again flourish. NOTE: Be careful hunting here! The trolls are perhaps harder than you think they are, and they have been known to steal weapons or shields from the unwary, and to loot the bodies of those they kill. You hunt at your own risk, and are responsible for retrieving anything stolen by the trolls. |
Surprise Release! Collectable Cards! |
Introducing DR's very own card collection system!
150 beautifully rendered cards will be slowly circulated by way of our treasure system. A merchant selling collector's cases for these cards has been setup on The Strand in the Crossing. Use the new CARDS verb to manage your collection. Complete a collection and you can sell it for a nice bit of money at the local pawn shops! Or keep them and trade with your friends. Be on the lookout for special foil cards! |
Foraging v2.0! |
With the new system, Foraging is now much more heavily based on the Environment factors of the room. Each item in the new system has been researched and tagged with the type of Environment it can be found in. Additionally, there are some other factors that will come into play such as the time of day, the weather, the season, which moon is in the sky... all of these can play a part in deciding if the item you are looking for can be found!
The syntax has aslo changed slightly... You can still FORAGE <item> as well as just FORAGE, but Rangers and Empaths will also be able to FORAGE CAREFUL <item> and FORAGE PRECISE <item>. These last two options give you the opportunity to possibly find a better quality item, but with increased Roundtime. FORAGE HELP is also available in case you forget. In addition, you will be able to COLLECT <item>. This will create a pile of the item at your feet if you are successful. Once the pile has been created, anyone can get an item out of the pile. This allows you to get multiple items all at once, but with an increase to Roundtime, and a possibly lower quality. Rangers, Empaths and Thieves will find that they receive a natural bonus in their attempt at finding items. All guilds will also be able to help or hinder their foraging attempts by performing certain actions, which we'll leave up to you to find out! |
