Crystal City Players/Logs/An Ode to Emotions
An Ode to Emotions was the eleventh performance by the Crystal City Players, and was performed at the Shoan a Sidelkuloa theater in Shard. The theme of the show was "emotions" and included a variety of songs about various feelings from happiness to sadness, to anticipation, love, fear, and excitement. The show was performed on the 18th day in the 10th month of Nissa the Maiden, Year of the Iron Toad, 452.
Note: The crowd was so amazing during this performance, it was decided to leave the crowd reactions in the log along with the performances.
Introduction
Lady of Elamiri Ayrell came through a thick dark curtain.
A chorus of applause starts up, seemingly led by Casari.

A chorus of applause starts up, seemingly led by Elurora.
(Ayrell makes her way to center stage, her steps graceful, coming to pause under one of the spotlights to smile warmly out at the crowd.)

From the seating area you hear Crobin yell, “GO STORY TELLING PEOPLE.”
Ayrell curtsies gracefully.
The sound of unanimous applause surges louder. Glancing over the audience members, you notice Allye, Tirost, Rileos, Leayne, Crobin, and Aemaranth are applauding and cheering.
(Ayrell takes a moment to gather herself, her mouth opening to speak then closing again. Drawing in a breath, she braces herself, the effort to project her voice a subtle yet noticeable challenge.)

Ayrell says, "Good evening, everyone. On behalf of myself, and the Crystal City Players, I would like to welcome you all back to the Shoan a Sidelkuloa for a performance we hope will make everyone a little... emotional."
Ayrell smiles.
Valynn smiles.
Ayrell says, "When it comes to emotions, there is no shortage of variety in the way our hearts and minds react to the many things we experience throughout our lives. Some good - some less so. Some lifting our spirits to unprecedented highs while others sink us to unfathomable lows."
From the seating area you hear Crobin yell, “I want to see TIrost weep for joy.”
Ayrell says, "For tonight, we have prepared a collection of songs that delve into some of these emotions. The way they affect us. The way we may have personally experienced them. As emotions are such a part of our lives, there is a chance some of you may related to one - or all - of our performances this evening."
A little bit of laughter floats over from the audience.
Ayrell says, "So, with that in mind, I encourage you all to open your hearts, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as we take you with us on what is sure to be an... emotional... journey."
Ayrell curtsies gracefully.

Ayrell smiles welcomingly at the crowd, her head lowering in a gracious nod as she turns to make her way off the stage.

Act One
Siendra
(Siendra steps out onto the stage, giving Ayrell a smile as the two women pass. As Ayrell exits, Siendra continues to the center of the stage, her stride confident. The slightest smirk plays on her lips as she stops and faces the audience.)
The sound of unanimous applause rises in volume. Glancing over the audience members, you notice Allye, Navesi, Aemaranth, and Elurora are applauding and cheering.

Siendra excitedly says, "Hello everyone! It is so good to see you all here. I am pleased to have the honor to commence this "Ode to Emotions". I believe the show has been greatly anticipated."

From the seating area you hear Crobin yell, "Go Siendra knock em dead"

(Siendra hides a grin, beginning to pace the stage casually. As she does so her hands move aimlessly through the air. Tiny droplets of water begin to coalesce around her, glistening in the stage lights like diamonds.)
You notice Leayne cheering in the seating area.
Siendra enigmatically says, "Thinking of an emotion to wax poetically about may seem easy. Love, and heartbreak, those are the ones many think of. Jealousy, joy, anger, pride...those play into our lives so often, and the ballads on them could be myriad. But I couldn't find the words to adequately convey any of them. And I began to wonder if sometimes I have held myself back too often..."
(Siendra pauses here, in speech and motion, as she looks thoughtfully into the distance. The droplets of water shimmer around her. She worries her bottom lip before glancing sidelong out at the crowd.)
Siendra carefully says, "I felt that - *feel* that - I am not versed enough in pure emotion to do them justice. I love, and I've lost, and I have such happiness in my life, but until more recently I have held myself back, as though just...anticipating what might come."
(Siendra turns back towards the audience now, once more at center stage. Her smile is a little sheepish, but she stands proudly just the same. Around her the droplets have become small globes of wavering water, nearly twenty of them continuing to grow in size as they pull more moisture from the air.)
Siendra says, "And so it hit me - I anticipate. I have waited my life with bated breath assuming I just wasn't ready, or good enough, or..."
Siendra clears her throat.
Siendra waves her hand distractedly.
Siendra wryly says, "Well, you take my meaning. This is all to say that the one emotion I really reverberate with is expectation. The thrill of the hunt, the excitement of what is going to happen, the focus on what's to come."
Siendra says, "Because I think no matter how deeply any of us feel something, there is always the build up inside of us. The secret, I have found, is letting it overflow when it is finally time."
(Siendra reaches one hand up to graze absently at one of the spheres of water, making it quaver. The reflection coming off of all of them creates ripples of light across the stage, and Siendra smiles. Softly, she begins to sing.)
Siendra hopefully sings in a soprano voice:
"The gentle touch of hand on hand
A glance across a room
A smile, a nod, it lets us know
That something is happening soon."
(Siendra lifts her hands, the globes of water rising and moving outward. They drift aimlessly over the crowd, seeming to dance tauntingly over the heads of those gathered.)
Siendra daringly sings in a soprano voice:
"The scent of prey upon the air
A track left in the dirt
The hunter trails through underbrush
They know to stay alert."
(Siendra casually twirls one finger in the air, making the spheres bob and lift over the theatre seats. Small droplets escape the globes and rain down in a soft patter on a few unlucky heads.)
Siendra boisterously sings in a soprano voice:
"A bottle breaks against a bar
A harsh word then is spoken
A table flips, the glares are thrown
The peaceful air is broken."
(Siendra's heels clack out a rhythm as she strides across the stage, beckoning more globes of water around her and sending them out to join the others that float teasingly throughout the theatre. They glimmer like chandeliers above the audience's heads.)
Siendra sadly sings in a soprano voice:
"A loved one's heart slows noticeably
Their eyes begin to dim
You hold your breath as theirs grows weak
The prognosis, it looks grim."
(Siendra stops again, and straightens, watching the watery spheres with curiosity. As though seeing them for the first time. They seem to still in response, hovering above their possible targets as they wait for an unspoken command.)
Siendra coyly sings in a soprano voice:
"The coin is tossed into the air
The roshambo's begun
The water surges forth to fall
For now the song is done."
(Siendra flashes a wicked grin, lifting her hand sharply. The globes explode above the crowd, but rather than gushing water onto the hapless spectators, the drops freeze instantaneously into soft snowflakes. The sudden squall drifts down, melting harmlessly before even having the chance to settle.)
A little bit of laughter floats over from the audience.
Siendra teasingly exclaims, "I hope the snow doesn't leave you all shivering with anticipation for the rest of the show. Now please, enjoy!"

(Siendra dips a low bow and gives a cheeky wave before strutting back off stage, humming to herself in satisfaction.)

Crobin yells, "Knew you would be great"
Act Two
Nyrhin
(Nyrhin strides confidently onto the stage, waving to the crowd, a mischievous grin upon his lips. In his other hand, he holds what appears to be a mug, keeping it at just the right angle so as to maintain the mystery of whether it is an empty prop - or a full one.)
(Nyrhin pauses at the center of the stage, his foot tapping as a cheerful tune begins to play.)
A chorus of applause starts up, seemingly led by Leayne.

You notice Betlind cheering for Nyrhin from the seating area.
Nyrhin jauntily sings in a countertenor voice:
"I woke with a grin and a girl on my chest,
Ale on my breath and no time for rest.
The sun barely up, but the day's lookin' fine,
With coin in my pouch and mischief in mind."
The sound of unanimous applause maintains intensity. Glancing over the audience members, you notice Elurora and Betlind are applauding and cheering.
Nyrhin mirthfully sings in a countertenor voice:
"The lads at the table, they raise up their mugs,
We laugh, we gamble, we toast to our luck,
Of a barmaid's smile or a bold little glance,
Happiness lives in the thrill of the chance."

(Nyrhin lifts his mug into the air, giving an exuberant huzzah before bringing it to his lips to take a convincing drink. When he lowers it again, he smiles out at the crowd, his steps peppy and dance-like as he travels to stand at stage left.)

Nyrhin sings in a countertenor voice:
"Oh, happiness flows like the finest of brews,
It dances in curves and worn leather shoes.
It's a toast with your mates, a kiss in the dark,
A rogue's little fortune, a flame and a spark."
(Nyrhin makes his way to stage right, a skip in his step, lifting his mug again to offer a toast to the crowd.)
Nyrhin lightheartedly sings in a countertenor voice:
"A song on the lute, and a dagger close by,
A wink from a lass with a dangerous eye.
The world is a game and I'm playing it bold,
With laughter and lies and a purse full of gold."
Laughter flows through the air, coming from the audience area.
Nyrhin jauntily sings in a countertenor voice:
"It's not about riches or battles hard-fought,
It's the stories, the wine, and the trouble I've caught.
Give me a tavern, a toast, and a dame -
And I'll show you a man who knows joy by name."
(Nyrhin points to himself with a wink and a devious grin as he dance-steps his way back to center stage.)
Nyrhin lightheartedly sings in a countertenor voice:
"Yeah, happiness rides on a tankard's rim,
In the gleam of her eye when the lights go dim.
It's the cheer of the crowd, the roll of the dice,
A rogue's kind of heaven - no rules, just vice."
(Nyrhin pauses to take what either is, or appears to be, a long chug of what may or may not be an actual beverage, finishing (or pretending to finish) the contents with a satisfied "ahh." Holding the now - or possibly always - empty mug high, he gives one last huzzah to the crowd, lowering in a suave, playful bow. He rises with an impish grin, finding a lady in the audience to whom he blows a flirtatious kiss before making his way off stage.)

Act Three
Ayrell
You hear a voice recite from the shadows:
"The stage goes dark, leaving the theater in an almost ominous silence, the performance area devoid of any sound to indicate movement. After a moment, a single spotlight appears over center stage, revealing a somber looking Ayrell, her eyes closed, arms draped at her sides, her figure motionless until the soft strings of a quiet ballad begin to fill the air."

(Ayrell slowly opens her eyes, her gaze distant, an expression of undeniable sadness etched across her gentle features.)
Ayrell sorrowfully sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Silent, empty, set apart,
This sadness grows within my heart.
To see the life I wish to live,
Replaced by something derivative.
I long to be seen, I long to be heard,
But when I speak, no one hears a word."
Ayrell gazes down at the floor.
Ayrell sorrowfully sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"I wear a smile to hide my pain,
My tortured soul crying out in vain.
For someone to notice that I exist,
For my worth to not be so easily dismissed."
(Ayrell brings one hand to rest just over her heart, grimacing as she lifts her head to gaze tearfully out at the crowd.)
Ayrell helplessly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Does anyone hear me?
Does anyone care?
I stand before you, the facade stripped bare.
Begging for someone to finally see,
I am more than even I believe me to be.
But their eyes pass through me like I'm not even there,
Does anyone hear me?
Does anyone care?"
(Ayrell turns her head slightly, the sparkle of tears forming over her lashes to glisten in the light that illuminates her from overhead.)
Ayrell sadly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"I fade to nothing behind a louder voice,
As if I am never the suitable choice.
No matter how hard I may strive to try,
I am never enough, and I never know why.
My fire, it dwindles as my heart starts to break.
Though I pretend I am fine, for appearance's sake."
Ayrell hopelessly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Lost in the shadows from which I long to be free.
Yet a life in the light, I no longer foresee.
I laugh on cue, I play the part.
While no one knows the truth in my heart."
(Ayrell holds her arms out slightly away from her body, taking on an almost pleading stance as her tear-filled gaze sweeps across the crowd.)
Ayrell helplessly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Does anyone hear me?
Does anyone care?
I stand before you, the facade stripped bare.
Begging for someone to finally see,
I am more than even I believe me to be.
But their eyes pass through me like I'm not even there,
Does anyone hear me?
Does anyone care?"
(Ayrell brings her hand back to her chest, fingers curled into a gentle fist as her shoulders rise and fall with a trembling breath. The music reaches a crescendo at the same time, dropping off suddenly to let the echo of the refrain linger over the theater before the gentle notes start again, softer this time, to match the poignant sound of Ayrell's voice.)
Ayrell hauntingly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Would it matter if I slipped away?
Would anyone notice were I gone one day?
Would the silence echo where I once stood?
Or would they forget me, like I knew they would?"
Ayrell quaveringly sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Always alone, though others are there.
Does anyone hear me?
Does anyone care?"
From the seating area you hear Betlind yell, “We love you, Ayrell!”
(Ayrell closes her eyes as a lone tear escapes from over her lashes. Bowing her head, she takes a moment, clearly affected by the lyrics. With the tips of her fingers, she brushes the moisture from her cheek, her smile trembling, unable to look directly at the crowd.)

A chorus of applause starts up, seemingly led by Ruea.
Ayrell curtsies gracefully.
The audience response of unanimous applause rises in volume. Glancing over the audience members, you notice Ruea, Illiya and Stelling are applauding and cheering.
(Ayrell's head remains bowed as the spotlight winks out, enveloping her in a veil of shadows that conceals her from view once again. A heavy, emotional quiet descends upon the theater, accompanied by a feeling that Ayrell is no longer there, though not even a whisper of sound gives away her departure.)

Act Four
Senthic
You hear a voice recite from the shadows:
"The stage is shrouded in darkness. Silence stretches, broken only by the occasional restless cough from the audience. Then, a low, steady drumbeat begins offstage. Soft but persistent, like a heartbeat. A dim light fades in, barely illuminating a lone figure center stage. The glow is soft and ember-like, as if cast by smoldering coals. As the performer lifts their head, the light swells slightly, just enough to reveal a few features."
Senthic chants in a tenor voice:
"I'm found thrumming in every adventurer's veins,
I'm the song that calls before combat reigns.
I'm the driving force behind every battle cry,
That hint of fear that makes you feel alive."

"The light swells as the drumbeat quickens to a thrum. Offstage, the sharp clang of metal striking metal rings out, joined by distant cries and shouts -- the chaos of a skirmish unfolding beyond the curtain. The drums gradually intensify, rising just enough to press through the clash of voices and steel."

"A deep, ember-red glow suffuses the backdrop. At intervals, the light flares brighter, each pulse perfectly timed to the rising cadence of the offstage drums. The shouts and cries of battle fade, overtaken by whispers and fragments of conversation, indistinct and overlapping."

"I'm the rush of adrenaline before a charge,
The thrill of facing danger head-on,
I'm ambition unchained, passion unbound,
A volcano that erupts with a thunderous sound."

"The glowing light begins to rise behind the backdrop, slowly intensifying, growing brighter and more urgent with every beat until it swells like a rising wave. It gives the illusion of something vast and volatile -- an eruption just beyond the horizon."

"I make the heart quicken, the air grow tight,
I cause reason and sense to take flight.
I am wild, I am reckless, I cannot be chained,
I whisper promises of legends and glory unrestrained."

"Impatience trails as my shadow,
Satisfaction I can never know.
Ardor and ambition are masks I wear,
Lust and passion are the banners I bear."

"The drums accelerate to a frantic pace, growing in number and volume. Layer upon layer of rhythm crashing like waves, driving the moment toward an inevitable end."

As the drums grow increasingly loud,
A pulsating, rhythmic cadence you feel in your core..."

"A final burst of light and a deep drum strike, then an abrupt, heavy silence descends."

Shaylynne breathes very slowly and looks much calmer.
Shaylynne takes a seat.
(Shaylynne gently lowers a vedda-wood tabor and places it on the ground at her feet.)
(Shaylynne begins tapping on her small two-sided drum with a slow, steady rhythm.)

Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"First was the monster hiding under my bed
When I got older it lived in my head
Heart skipped a beat with each shadow outside
Sometimes I felt I was losing my mind"

(Shaylynne quickens the beat of her drums, the tension building in her voice takes on a more timorous tone.)

"Afraid of the future and haunted by past
Wondering which moment I'll draw my last
When Urrem'tier comes to rob me of breathing
Just the mere thought of it leaves my chest heaving"
Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Introverted in my own little world
One step on the stage and everything swirls
Hoping the crowd didn't notice my fright
Am I sure obscured trepidation from sight?"
A little bit of laughter floats over from the audience.
(Shaylynne slaps both heads of the tabor with her hands. A restless tune fills the air, reminiscent of a racing heartbeat.)
Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"Off to the gala, and who wore it best?
Eyes up and down on myself and the rest
It's for fun they said, but I just end up hearing
Do I fit in, did I wear the right earrings?"
Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"I love the woods and all wilderness things
Until the last bell of Phelim's Vigil rings
In the dark I imagine my nightmares unfurl
A twig snaps, what was that! Oh, a squirrel"
(Shaylynne looks overwhelmed by her thoughts and her timing slips, causing the music emanating from her instrument to become erratic and uneven.)
Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"In A too crowded tavern, can't breathe, so much talking
Who's that over there that keeps staring, they stalking?
Nothing I crave more than social reprieve
I stay for the party while I want to leave"
Shaylynne sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:
"What if I can't? What if I don't?
If I let all these worries take over I won't...
Monsters, Loneliness, Death, and Stagefright
Status, Darkness, and Spaces Too Tight
Any and all of these things might..."
Shaylynne exclaims to herself, "Stop!"
