Sometimes called chrysolite, peridot is a gem-quality olivine mineral. It occurs in volcanic basalt and some meteorites. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur only in one color: olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, resulting in individual gems that vary from yellow, olive-green, brownish-green, and in rare cases, may have a medium-dark toned pure green with no secondary yellow hue or brown mask. Lighter colored gems are due to lower iron concentrations. Peridots can sometimes be mistaken for emeralds and other green gems.
