A variety of quartz, amethyst is a violet gemstone that owes its color to irradiation, impurities of iron, and other transition metals. It primarily occurs in hues from light lavender to pale violet to deep purple and may exhibit one or both secondary hues of red and blue.
Green quartz is sometimes incorrectly called green amethyst, which is a misnomer. The proper terminology is prasiolite, though other green quartz names are vermarine or lime citrine.
Amethyst is the traditional gift to River Elf children born in the month of Moliko the Balance, and the grannies of the clan swear that the stone promotes wisdom and detachment in those who wear it.
