Aegis of Granite
Abbreviation: AEG
Prerequisites: Earth Sense, Fist of Stone, 20th circle
Minimum Prep: 10
Casting Cap: 60
Valid Spell Target: Self, Metal shields
Description: Discovered in an ancient cave by Dwarven Warrior Mages, the Aegis of Granite spell offers two possible effects. First, casting the spell on a shield will imbue it with Earth elemental magic, causing it to become sturdier and more protective at the cost of increasing its weight and hindrance. The second function of this spell becomes apparent when cast without holding a shield. A shield of granite will be created in the caster's hand or on the arm, providing a solid defense against attacks while also increasing the caster's ability to block attacks. A shield affected by this spell will graually repair itself, though it cannot repair damage done before the spell was cast. The spell ends when the caster relinquishes control of the shield.
Example Messaging: You feel a pulse of elemental Earth energy surge through the ground beneath your feet and stream upward through your body. With a deft manipulation you channel the energy into a coherent pattern, shaping the outline of a tiny granite shield in your left hand.

You feel lingering traces of the Earth magic concentrate in your body, strengthening your shield arm and filling you with energy.

Additional Spell Messaging

SHAPE SHIELD TO [OPTION]

Valid options: SPIKED (add spikes to the shield) SMOOTH (remove spikes)

Other options: AETHEREAL ELECTRICAL FIERY WATERY EARTHEN AIRY

Aethereal

You run your fingers around the edge of your granite shield, subtly shaping the pattern of the spell to accommodate a tiny amount of Aether energy. An aura of silver-blue light gathers about the edge of the shield, sending tendrils of energy slowly spinning off in all directions.
Whorls of silver-blue light trail from the rim of your granite shield.

Electrical

You run your fingers around the edge of your granite shield, subtly shaping the pattern of the spell to accommodate a tiny amount of Electricity energy. Tiny sparks of electricity shimmer into existence on the shield, covering it with a shimmering pattern of golden lightning.
Tiny tendrils of lightning caress the rim of your granite shield.

Fiery

You run your fingers around the edge of your granite shield, subtly shaping the pattern of the spell to accommodate a tiny amount of Fire energy. Softly flickering orange flames suddenly spring from the rim of the shield, dancing wildly.
The circle of flames rimming your granite shield expand and contract slowly.
Tiny flames leap from the edge of your granite shield, dancing hungrily.

Watery

You run your fingers around the edge of your granite shield, subtly shaping the pattern of the spell to accommodate a tiny amount of Water energy. Beads of water condense on the edge of the shield, slowly crystallizing into a forest of wickedly-sharp yet breathlessly delicate icy spikes.
An icy shard grows slowly from the edge of your granite shield, but melts away before it grows too long.

Airy

You run your fingers around the edge of your granite shield, subtly shaping the pattern of the spell to accommodate a tiny amount of Air energy. With an airy whisper, tiny barely visible whirlwind coalesce on the shield's surface, weaving to and fro in a delicate dance.
A brief but powerful gust of wind explodes from the whirlwinds dancing about the rim of your granite shield.

Spiked

You run your hand over your granite shield, deftly manipulating its pattern. With care and precision, you call forth a forest of wickedly barbed spikes to cover its surface.

Smooth

You run your hand over your granite shield, deftly manipulating its pattern. Very slowly, the spikes covering its surface withdraw, leaving it smooth to the touch.

It should be noted that the larger the shield (more mana that is put into the initial cast of the spell) the harder it is to create the spikes.

Notes

  • The more mana put into the initial cast, the larger and stronger the shield. Additional casts will increase the duration to a maximum of 33 minutes.
  • Dropping, wearing, or removing (if cast as armworn) will cause the shield to shatter and the spell will end.
  • The maximum size shield that can be created as "armworn" is small. However, more mana will still increase the initial duration of the armworn shield.
  • One can SHAPE SHIELD to give the shield additional atmospheric effects.
  • Shaping spikes requires a skill check that is more difficult the larger the shield is.
  • Compatible with the Pattern Hues cantrip.
