That isn't an accident, just a failure of your crafting score which takes tool quality, ingredient quality and skill + techniques into account. There are no random accidents that damage tools, yet.

We also don't look at tool hardness versus material hardness for the purpose of determining damage, much like we do not look at weapon hardness versus shield hardness for the purpose of damaging either of those. Just too much math/complexity, so we approximate the whole thing with durability. Pewter chisels are likely to have crap durability, which may be why they seem to wear out quickly.

How do they analyze? You only suffer a penalty if they get damaged beyond a certain point.
