Limestone is a common type of sedimentary rock composed mostly of calcite and aragonite. It is commonly white to grey in color. Limestone that is unusually rich in organic matter can be almost black in color, while traces of iron or manganese can give limestone an off-white to yellow to red color.

Dense, massive limestone is sometimes described as marble. True marble is produced by recrystallization of limestone during regional metamorphism that accompanies the mountain building process (orogeny).
