Historically halberd weapons consist of a large axe head affixed to a pole. Unlike spears, pikes, and javelins (which were made for thrusting or throwing), halberds were designed to be either thrusted or swung from side to side. Being long, they were effective anti-cavalry weapons and having an axe tip instead of a pointed tip made them more suited for close-quarters combat than standard spears or pikes.
